Can you take propecia if you have a varicocele?

I was diagnosed with a varicocele aged 16. I've been thinning on my head and have a receding hairline. Wanted to start finasteride as soon as possible at 19. Can you take propecia as a prevention to mpb say every other day just to reduce dht levels slightly? Thanks

It's not a simple yes or no answer as several things need to be taken into account. I generally base my decisions and recommendations in collaboration with the patient's urologist as it depends somewhat on the type of varicocoele and the chance of low sperm count from that type of varicocoele. A baseline sperm count before starting finasteride is generally advised. One must be aware that both finasteride and varicocoeles can lower sperm count and impair fertility in some men. If there is some evidence at the outset that sperm counts are quite low, one might reconsider whether to use

If you were my patient and had a varicicele and wanted finasteride, I would give it to you. There is no evidence that this drug will make it worse
