5 months post op. Transplanted beard hair on sideburns still thin and sticks out during first two weeks of growth. Will it lay down as it matures and gets heavier? Should I start brushing it? Is this common in beard transplants?

If the implantation angle was done correctly, meaning the grafts were placed following the natural direction of beard growth, this issue is temporary.
During the first 6 months, transplanted hairs often appear coarse, thin, and stick out, as they are adapting to their new location.
Over time, as the hairs become thicker and heavier, they will naturally lay down on their own.

However, if the grafts were implanted at an incorrect angle (too upright or against the natural direction), some hairs may continue to grow outward even after a year.
If that happens, your doctor can assess the angle once the beard fully matures (around 9–12 months).

As long as the placement was correct, the final result will look natural and well-aligned with your facial hair pattern.

It's quite common for transplanted beard hair to initially grow in a bit unruly, especially in the first few months post-op. At 5 months post-transplant, the hair may still appear thin and stick out because it hasn’t fully matured yet. As the hair grows thicker and longer over the next several months, it should naturally start to lay down and blend in better.
In the meantime, here are a few things you can try:
Brushing: Yes, gently brushing your beard can help train the hairs to lay flat. Use a soft-bristle brush and brush the hair in the direction you want it to grow.
Beard Oils or Balms: These products can help soften the hair and weigh it down, making it easier to manage and helping it lie flat.
Patience: As your beard continues to mature over the next 6 to 12 months, the hair should thicken, get heavier, and naturally lie down better.
It’s completely normal for transplanted beard hair to take time to settle, and you should see improvement as the hairs mature.
