Massage of a full-thickness skin graft on nose?

I had a FTSG 4 weeks ago to repair a defect from Mohs due to a BBC. I have now been advised to massage the graft 3x daily for about 30 seconds. The graft is "puffy", raised above the surrounding skin surface. Since I have started the massage, the area surrounding the graft has become reddened and somewhat raised/inflamed looking in spots. It did not have a red appearance before the massaging began. I have contacted my doctor's office. I am discouraged from speaking to him directly.
