Can I consume maca root while on medication?

I'm 26, I have a very healthy lifestyle. I go to the gym three times a day and sometimes four. I have been looking for research about the maca root because I want to gain the natural way. I am very petite and I have a fast metabolism. I am currently drinking (because I have acne problems) minocycline & spironolactone to control the acne. Will it be harmful to consume maca root while I am in taking does pills?

Thank you for your question.  There is insufficient evidence to tell you if Maca is safe while taking minocycline and spironolactone.  From my knowledge Maca is thought to possibly have an effect on female hormonal imbalance, now whether that works by preventing androgen from binding to its receptor like spironolactone is unknown so the interactions are unknown as well.  I have not heard about Maca being used to gain weight as the two main uses I have always seen are for anemia and male/female hormone issues.  Please follow up with your board certified Dermatologist to discuss your treatment plans and incorporating herbals like Maca.  Regards, Dr. Matt Elias
