Unfortunately once you have gastric bypass you can’t get balloon. However we can revise your bypass endoscopically by making your stoma smaller. This way you have a second chance at weight loss
Patients who have had prior stomach surgery, including hiatal hernia repair, lap band, or gastric bypass, are not eligible to receive the Gastric balloon. This is due to the increased risk of the balloon causing a perforation in the stomach. Even in patients without previous stomach surgery, some have experienced stomach perforations, but these typically occur after extended periods of side effects. The reason for this increased risk is because gastric bypass surgery alters the anatomy of the stomach, making it more susceptible to perforation. The balloon, which is filled with gas or saline, can put pressure on the weakened stomach wall, leading to a tear or perforation. If you have had a gastric bypass surgery, you should talk to your doctor about other weight loss options that may be more appropriate for you.In general, the intragastric balloon is a safe and effective weight loss treatment for people who are overweight or obese. However, it is important to talk to your doctor to make sure that you are a good candidate for the procedure. Here are some of the risks and benefits of the intragastric balloon:Risks:Nausea and vomitingAbdominal painInfectionPerforationBlockage of the intestinesBenefits:Weight lossImproved blood pressureImproved cholesterol levelsReduced risk of diabetesIf you are considering having an intragastric balloon placed, it is important to discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor. Hello, I hope this answer finds you well, but sadly one of the main contraindications for any type of gastric ballon is a prior gastric surgery or bariatic surgery such as a gastric bypass. Getting a ballon after these type of surgeries can put a risk your life, as the anatomy of your body has been changed, a ballon can stop the pasage of solids and liquids, resulting in bowel obstruction, a life threatning condition. Have a blessed day.
Nadia, Unfortunately, you cannot have a gastric balloon if you've had gastric bypass. There is a higher risk of stomach injury or perforation in individuals who have had stomach surgery (including bypass). Furthermore, the balloon would not likely fit in the stomach pouch that is created after gastric bypass. You might consider looking into endoscopic outlet reduction (Transoral Outlet Reduction, or TORe). This is a process by which the connection between your stomach pouch and small intestine is endoscopically sutured to a smaller size, which can lead to further weight loss. This is offered in several centers around the country. We will be offering it in early 2018. Good luck!
Hello,Great question! If you had stomach surgery, we cannot place a gastric balloon, however, you may qualify for a bariatric revision procedure, called Overstitch. The surgeon goes inside the stomach endoscopically and places stitches to make the pouch smaller. NO incisions.
