Can a compression garment be too tight?

Question

I had laser lipo on inner and outer thighs 3 days ago. They took off 2500cc. I have no complaints other than this garment. It's squeezing my abdomen to the point it's making me sick. I'm unable to eat or drink much. As an RN I understand this is a potential problem. I've unbundled the top for a little extra room but still not feeling well. I do not have a big abdomen so confused why I feel this way.

I am very sorry to hear of your discomfort following your procedure. You are correct in your concern with the fit of your garment. I would suggest following up with your Board Certified Plastic Surgeon as to possibly another size garment for you to wear. Your compression garment should provide comfortable compression and support with as little discomfort as possible. I typically will follow up with my patients within the first 24 hours following surgery and then at one week post-operative to follow their recovery as well as address any issues that may arise, including garment size. If the garment is too tight you run the risk of possible permanent demarcation where as if the garment is too loose you are not receiving any of the benefits associated with post-operative compression. If the compression is too tight or leaves any demarcation it can cause permanent marks. I suggest you speak to your physician for their treatment protocols.  Best, Dr. Emer.

If your garment is too tight, ask for a larger size. The garment should provide snug comfortable compression, but should not be painful and interfere with eating and drinking. Nausea can occur if you are dehydrated.
