Will my body reject the staples that are placed to close off the stomach if I am allergic to metal?

HelloI haven't seen or heard about a case of staples rejection or allergy. Those are made of specialized medical degree material, Titanium. There is nothing that can replace the staples in Gastric sleeve surgery. In bypass exist the possibility to do all the procedure just with stitches; the advantage of the staples is that it give us more technology and safety. As you can imagine, we would need more time just with stitches in the operation room. I really don't think that you will develop an allergic reaction to staples, but we can make a test in your skin with this material prior the procedure and see the local reaction, if there exist an allergy we will see it immediately as a response of your Inmune system. 

I have not heard or experience this with any of my patients.  The staples used are made of titanium which is an inert metal which means it does not react many things.  These staples are not only used in bariatric surgery but in general and thoracic surgery as well.  Hundreds of thousands are used in the USA and world wide daily and I am yet to find an article or study that found an allergic reaction to this metal.

Some people are sensitive to certain metals such as nickel.  I've never seen or heard of a problem with surgical staples, which are currently made out of titanium.  I've occasionally had a patient who was worried about this.  In such a case I would give the patient a titanium clip and bend it so that they could put it in as an "ear ring" for a while to see if it caused a reaction.  So far nobody has reacted.
