Can Fractured or Cracked Ribs Cause Severe Breast Pain?

Question

I had a Free Flap TRAM 16 years ago (bilat). I believe I cracked or maybe even broke a rib(s) a couple weeks ago which explains the chest soreness I have had although I continue to have severe pain in my breasts most especially in the aureola. Not having a lot of sensation in my breasts at all normally has caused me to be concerned about feeling such intense pain ever since my accident. Could this be something other than damaged ribs and contusions?

It is not uncommon to have referred pain to the breast or chestwall with a rib fracture.  Underneath each rib, lies the nerves that supply sensation to the breast and chest wall.  Hence, a rib fracture will frequently cause pain to the breast and areola.   I recommend close followup with your reconstructive surgeon.

Fractured ribs can be very painful.  However, you will need a work-up by your medical doctor.

Broken ribs are painful but there may be other causes for pain. It would be best to be seen your doctor to sort it out.

If you sustained significant trauma and possible rib fractures then you may want to be examined and have a check X ray  to be sure there is no other problem present.
