An overbite (technically called a Class II malocclusion) often is an unbalanced jaw relationship caused by an "underdeveloped" or undersized mandible (lower jaw) or "overdeveloped" maxilla (upper jaw) which has an effect on facial aesthetics, including "lip competence" (lip size and position). These patients tend to have a more prominent upper lip with the lower lip appearing more retruded and less full. In profile this can also appear strange with the upper lip "sticking out" over the lower lip which appears smaller. Restoring a normal jaw relationship often restores balance to the lip relationship as well. This can be accomplished with orthodontics and/or orthodontic surgery (orthognathic surgery) where jaw positions are restored to a normal relationship. A mistake can be made in addressing the lip appearance orsize without addressing the underlying skeletal relationship.
