Eye Safety During Diode and IPL Laser treatment? Is my experience okay, and how can I be safe next time?

Was given opaque 'tanning goggles' that covered my eye sockets only (plastic, not metal), is that sufficient eye protection during IPL and diode laser treatment, including diode treatment around the temple area of the face? I was also given cotton balls underneath the goggles for ‘more protection’ which seemed makeshift. I pushed the goggles tight against my eyes to be safe and squeezed eyes shut, but when treated at the temple area could see a lot of flashing lights anyway, is that okay?
