There's a good chance this is AGA but of course telogen effluvium (TE) can often be present in women with AGA too. How does one diagnosis AGA? Well, with a careful examination by an experienced physician. If there is any doubt, a biopsy with use of horizontal sections can confirm the diagnosis as a so called terminal to vellus ratio on biopsy of less than 4:1 is suggestive of AGA. However, usually this is not necessary. Androgenetic alopecia is often misdiagnosed in the early stages as telogen effluvium.  Be sure to see an expert. IT's not common for a 22 year old to develop chronic telogen effluvium as the sole diagnosis so this diagnosis may need to be re-evaluated.
