Dental crown with post. How long will it last until I need an implant?

Even with a good x-ray and photo of your underlying tooth and crown, it would be impossible for any dentist (including any of the dentists participating on the Realself forum) to accurately estimate how long your crown and post will last. What did you dentist say? What was his prediction?Saying that, if your dentist and you feel that your crown will be short lived, it is probably best to be proactive and do an implant before it comes off or breaks. This way you and your dentist have the best control over solving your problem and avoiding any embarrassing dental emergencies where you may have to go around missing a front tooth for a few days until a temporary replacement tooth can be made for you (oftentimes called a "flipper"). Being a dentist for 35 years I can state that a very good proportion of dental emergencies happen over the weekend, holidays or times when either the patient or dentist is out of town. If you like to roll the dice, then be prepared for some inconvience. If you want security, then be proactive and do the implant sooner, rather than later.
