Why can a Med Spa perform laser hair removal on the scrotum, but at home devices say it is not recommended?

laser hair removal can be done easily in this area you just need to go to a place that is experienced. aerolase or diode lasers do very well. over the counter devices will not help unfortunately and put you at risk for burn.  Best, Dr. Emer.

This skin area is not only more sensitive, but darker in pigment and tends to burn.  You need a skilled provider to determine the appropriate settings that are high enough to get results, but without causing a burn.  Also, you must hold any laser device flat and perpendicular to the skin, which is very difficult to perform on yourself with the correct angle, over nonflat body parts, especially when it hurts.  With the Candela GentleMax Pro, short bursts of cryogen cool the skin and we rarely need to provide topical anesthetic, even for the scrotum and shaft.  However, it is a sensitive area and most of us in the field do offer topical anesthetics as well as cool gel packs, if desired.  Definitely an area better left to the professionals.

you should make sure they have a high end laser for hair removal and not just a much cheaper hair reduction system. we have a Cynosure Elite which has both an Alexandrite and YAG laser within it. This means we can treat virtually all skin types.the scrotum will be very sensitive. You better make sure that they give you a strong numbing cream to apply 45-60 minutes before treatment (cover with saran wrap after you apply the cream, so that it absorbs better) and have a cooler that blows cold air on you while you are getting lasered. for this reason, you may be better off at a plastic surgeon's office for this tender area.david berman md
