Radiesse and collagen?

Most doctors say the “results” of Radiesse last 12-18 months. Does the face really flatten back out after this? What happens to the collagen? Does the remaining collagen still provide volume after the product dissolves? Or mainly texture and tightness?

Thank you for your question about Radiesse and how long the results truly last.

Radiesse typically provides visible volume correction for about 12 to 18 months. However, your face does not simply “flatten back out” once that time passes.

Radiesse works in two ways:
- Immediate volume from the gel carrier
- Long-term collagen stimulation from the calcium hydroxylapatite microspheres

Over time, the gel portion gradually dissolves. During that process, your body produces new collagen around the microspheres. Even after the product is fully broken down, the collagen your body created remains.

What does that mean for you?
- Some of the initial fullness softens as the gel absorbs.
- The new collagen continues to provide structural support.
- Many patients notice ongoing improvement in skin texture and firmness.
- There is usually some retained volume compared to before treatment.

So while you may not look exactly as full as you did right after treatment, most patients do not return all the way to their original baseline.

Maintenance treatments can help preserve both volume and collagen stimulation over time.

Radiesse is a biostimulatory filler, which means that even after the Radiesse material itself is absorbed by the body, some of the structural proteins of the skin, including collagen, that were induced by Radiesse will still be there. I hope this is helpful.
