One week after LASIK surgery, low prescription, blurrier near than before surgery.

Question

I had 20/30 and 20/25 and was nearsighted. I didn’t have thin corneas, dry eyes or astigmatism. I felt sharp pain during my surgery - not pressure. They say they have only had two patients like this. 7 days later, I am blurry and hazy, in both eyes. I now have 20/25 in both eyes with a blurry spot in my left eye. I never had blur up close, now it’s hard to be on my phone or my computer. I’m using the medical drops, blink drops and gel drops. Help! Bothing has changed since the day I woke up.

Pain during the procedure should not impact the visual outcome after, unless you have inflammation or a corneal abrasion. Focusing can be more strenuous only in the first couple weeks if you are under 40. However, if you are over 40, then it is normal for the near vision to be reduced after full distance correction. Dryness can also contribute to blur. I would use preservative free artificial tears every 2 hours and return to your eye doctor if there is no improvement.

It is impossible to say whether there was a problem or not during your treatment. Some types of Lasik machines do cause pain normally during the first step in a lot of the patients (others do not). Near vision would be expected to be worse in a nearsighted patient, especially in the beginning and especially if you are middle aged. This may be due to dryness. I would recommend that you discuss your issues with your doctor, and if you are not satisfied with the answers, please obtain a second opinion.
