The white bulbs at the end of a hair is likely sebum a waxy substance made from your oil glad.  It is not related to genetic hair loss or balding.

One of the side effects of using topical minoxidil is dry flakey skin or scalp irritation.  See your doctor for an exam to make sure this is not something else.

Alopecia areata has a certain pattern.  Genetic androgenic alopeica due to DHT (a byproduct of testosterone) also has a certain pattern.  If you think you have both (it can happen), ask your doctor.
