Since the follicles are entering the rest phase prematurely, is it possible that the hairs are shed to be smaller and thinner since they have not had enough time to grow and thicken up?

If one has a rapid cycling TE, hairs are shed in as soon as 6 months (maybe less). They don't get a chance to grow long and fatten up. We often see this in the temples in patients with TE but it can occur throughout the scalp. Patients with TE typicall have hairs more than 3 cm (and usually more than 5 cm). But yes, absolutely- short hairs can be seen. Short skinny hairs can be seen in androgenetic alopecia of course, and also in alopecia areata.
