I want to take Finasteride for my Hair. I'm wondering if this will effect me having children down the road. (I'd like to start having kids in 2 or 3 years) I will stop taking it when I want to start having kids.

The  half-life of finasteride is short. Therefore, in my opinion, if you stop finasteride and give a three to six-month washout., There should be no problem with you having birth defects from the drug.

Finasteride is not going to have an effect on your future children as we understand the drug now. As you are aware, it is extremely important not to become pregnant while using the medication nor within the first 2 months of stopping the drug.

Hi Megan,
It's true that Finasteride has a short half life, meaning that if you stopped it well in advance of having children, it shouldn't affect your kids. I think though, that this would be an unwise idea. If you are premenopausal, there is always the possibility of getting pregnant. I feel that the risks are just too high. There are lots of other treatments for hair loss that you can consider. First though, you should see a qualified hair restoration physician to diagnose your type of hair loss. Hair loss in women is complicated and there are certain diagnoses we need to rule out.

Finastride is FDA approved for men, and is used off-label for women who are post-menopausal.  Finastride taken by a women will lead to side effects (to the fetus) should she get pregnant while taking Finastride.  However if you stop the medication, and wait more than 30 days to get pregnant, then you do not have any danger.

Yes, if a woman takes finasteride, particularly in the first trimester of pregnancy, she can have a baby with sexual identification anatomy problems. This should not be a problem if the husband is taking it
