Pain with bone graft 4 weeks after the procedure.

Question

I had an extraction and bone graft done on my tooth # 29 exactly 4 weeks ago by a surgeon referred by my general dentist. I still have pain. The way it is normally in the morning when I wake up it is good, but as the day progresses it gets worse, and sometimes excruciating. I have gone back to him couple of times and he says it is healing fine and give it some time. I am not sure what to do and if this is normal? Thanks for your response

With any surgical procedure, you can expect discomfort for several weeks. It is not normal at this stage to have excruciating pain, but without xrays and photos, I couldn't really tell you if it is infected or what the issue may possibly be. Tooth #29 can sit very close to a nerve in your lower jaw. If the root of the tooth was close enough to the nerve and the extraction irritated it, it could take 6 months to resolve. But consider the fact that you had a piece of your body surgically removed. I usually tell my patients to allow 6-8 weeks to fully heal from surgical procedures.
