Can tretinoin enhance hyperpigmentation?

I've startes using Tretinoin a few weeks ago for anti aging (i'm 37) and mild pigmentation. Now my pigmentation got way worse and looks like a have big blocks of it on my face which altogether got darker. Is it a temporary side effect, when it gets worse before it gets better? Oh, and i use sunscreen religiously. I'm really lost, so thank you for your response in advance.
