I've been prescribed Spironolactone and/or birth control to get what remains of my cystic acne under control (it has improved with a new topical regimen, but I still get some cysts around my period, which is somewhat irregular). I would prefer to avoid taking oral medication if possible, and am worried about weight gain. Are there side effects I should be worried about with Spironolactone, beyond potassium levels and increased urination?

Hard to comment on politically, however clinically, the use of spironolactone to treat acne can be both effective and safe- providing potassium levels are monitored. For the occasional outbreak the steps outside below maybe alternatives to spironolactone.
