Thank you for your question. You are asking if you can take vitamins to help with hair loss after taking Accutane, or isotretinoin. I can certainly give you some guidance about this, without a submitted photo for reference, and without a physical exam. I’m a Board Certified Cosmetic Surgeon and Fellowship-trained Oculoplastic Surgeon. I’ve been in practice in Manhattan and Long Island for over 20 years. I’ve been performing hair transplants since I started my practice, and have been prescribing finasteride to male pattern hair loss patients since 1997. I’m also the founder of TrichoStem Hair Regeneration Centers, based on a system we developed for non-surgical treatment of pattern hair loss for men and women. Hair thinning has been reported after Accutane treatment, but it is usually temporary. Vitamins such as biotin (vitamin B7), vitamin E, and vitamin D are particularly helpful in promoting hair growth, and hair health. However, since effects of Accutane on thinning hair are temporary, normal hair growth may resume from just a regular, healthy diet. Since Accutane does cause systemic changes, and does affect the skin, I don’t advise any aggressive cosmetic treatments for at least a year after the regimen stops. However, if you are still experiencing hair thinning around a year after treatment, it is important to have a diagnosis for possible pattern hair loss, which can happen concurrently with other conditions. I’m not saying this is what happened to you, but if hair is still thin about a year after stopping Accutane, you may want to have this checked as a separate issue unrelated to Accutane. I hope you found this information helpful. Thank you for your question.
