I had a permanent crown placement done last week (with no root canal) and have never experienced so much pain at a dentist visit in my entire life! No numbing agent was used and I felt like my nerve endings were on fire! The dentist laughed it off and made me feel ridiculous for yelling in pain. Is this normal practice? Also my gum is now extremely sensitive to hot and cold.

It is entirely possible that the deep decay that was existing under the old crowns could cause renewed infection in the tooth. Also, if there is not enough tooth left due to the decay, the tooth could fracture/split. I would return to your dentist and discuss this with him.
The only way to make them right is to replace them- and yes it's not what you wanted to hear. Zirconia is popular, but unfortinately it is not very pretty most of the time. EMax is usually a better choice. Next time be sure you love them at try in before they are cemented.
The most predictable solution for black triangles in the gums between teeth is to change the shape of the teeth adjacent to the black triangles. When crowns are not involved, teeth must be reshaped and then orthodontically moved closer together. In your case, the solution is much more simple....
