Using tretinoin after 30 percent TCA peel on upper & lower eyelids, why did the gel dry my eyelids?

I had a jessners/ 30 percent TCA peel done on my upper and lower eyelids. The results were awesome! About 2 weeks later I went back to using 0.1 tretinoin on my upper and lower eyelids. This time I used gel instead of cream. The gel dried out my eyelids so bad! I continued using thinking I was going through a new purging phase. 2 weeks using the gel my eyelids didn’t get better! I switched back to 0.1 tretinoin cream and the eyelids are looking good again. Why did the gel do this to my eyelids?

It's possible that the gel formulation of the tretinoin was too strong or harsh for your delicate eyelid skin. The gel formulation may contain higher concentrations of alcohol or other drying agents, which could have exacerbated the dryness and irritation that you experienced.

In addition, the skin on the eyelids is thinner and more sensitive than other areas of the face, which can make it more prone to irritation and dryness. Tretinoin is a powerful exfoliant and can cause skin dryness and irritation, especially when used in higher concentrations or in combination with other exfoliating treatments, such as chemical peels.

It's important to follow the instructions of your dermatologist or plastic surgeon when using tretinoin or other exfoliating treatments, and to be gentle and cautious when applying them to the delicate skin around the eyes. If you experience excessive dryness, irritation, or other concerns, it's best to stop using the treatment and consult with your healthcare provider to determine the best course of action.
