Can gastric bypass be reversed after extreme weight loss?

my wife had gastric bypass surgery 5 years ago. She continues to lose weight and is down to 92 lbs. Can gastric bypass possibly be reversed in extreme situations as this. I am extremy concerned.

Yes, gastric bypass can be reversed if needed. In your wife's case, she needs to be seen by a bariatric surgeon and a bariatric dietician for an evaluation. Blood work needs to be done and a nutritional assessment needs to be made. Surgery is not the first step in these situations.

92 pounds sound like an unhealthy weight.  A gastric bypass can be reversed, but its a complicated undertaking.  Your wife first needs to get her nutrition optimized, if possible.  That may require a feeding tube be placed into your wife's stapled-off stomach so that food can be introduced into that extra intestinal length that right now is bypassed and not seeing food.  It can be done laparoscopically, and is a quick and low-risk procedure.  With the help of a bariatric surgeon and a dietician her nutritional situation can be optimized, and then the bypass can be reversed or modified by decreasing the amount of her intestinal bypass.  Right now it is probably too long, so there is not enough intestinal length in contact with the food to get the consumed nutrients absorbed in order to maintain her weight.
