Is hair loss related to silicone implants?

I got 275cc silicone implants at the end of October 2013. I have not really noticed anything unusual although the left breast does feel less full and "formed" than the right one. I had nexplanon implanted at the end of may. About a month after that my hair started falling out severely and diffusely. I had blood work for my thyroid & it was normal. Could hair loss be an autoimmune response to my implants? Or related to my birth control? (It's not listed as one of the side effects of nexplanon).

Change of blood flow, and scarring (deep and at the skin level) can cause hair follicles to shut down restricting new hair growth. The current hair may go in the dormant phase (telogen) and fall out (telogen effluvium). Sometimes an operation of any kind can cause temporary hair loss. Breast implants themselves are not responsible for this. I suggest you consult with a dermatologist.

There has been no reported correlation between breast implants and hair loss.  I would suggest that you consult with a dermatologist who can evaluate your issue and give you a possible answer as to the cause.

is no scientific evidence that silicone implants lead to hair loss.However, hormonal changes can lead to hair
loss.Make sure you see your primary
care physician and get all you hormones checked including thyroid.If you are on a high androgen index birth
control pill then it may be contributing to your hair loss.If you are on birth control, then either
select a low androgen index birth control or use non hormonal form of birth
control. Here is the list of birth control medications from lowest to
highest androgen index:Desogen, Ortho-Cept, Ortho-Cyclen, Ortho Tri-Cyclen,
Micronor, Nor-Q D, Ovcon-35, Brevicon/Modicon, Ortho Norvum 7/7/7, Ortho Novum
10-11, Tri-Norinyl, Norinyl and Ortho 1/35, Demulen 1/35, Triphasil/Tri-Levien,
Nordette, Lo/Ovral, Ovrette, Ovral, Loestrin1/20, Loestrin 1.5/30 Progstin implants, injections, rings and patches can also exacerbate

The silicone breast implant has been extensively studied and scrutinized by the FDA.   There is no evidence to show that silicone breast implants cause hair loss.  The hair loss could be related to stress or possibly even the anesthesia.   I do not know much about nexplanon, but you could ask your doctor if it can cause hair loss.

Some patients report minor hairloss due to anesthesia which can last few months to a year after surgery. But based on scientific research- silicone implants do not cause hair loss.

This is actually a good question. Women often struggle with how to rule out one thing or another that may adversely affect them. This can be from a variety of things including birth control, childbirth, medications, illnesses, as well as breast implants, liposuction, facelift or other discretionary procedures. That beingsaid, tere is no evidence that I'm aware of that silicone or saline breast implants cause hair loss. It is much more likely that your birth control is causing hormonal changes that are cauing your sudden hair loss. You might want to disuss this with your GYN to see if a different product can be prescribed.

Hair loss does occur in some individuals as a result of major stress, like surgery.  But this phenomenon occurs about six weeks following surgery and usually resolves within a year.  Based on the scientific literature, there does not appear to be an association of hair loss with silicone implants.  There is a low incidence of hair loss occurring after nexplanon implantation.  Based on this, it is reasonable to assume that the nexplanon implant is the causative factor for your hair loss.  Hope this helps.
