Persistent Pigmentation After IPL & Sunburn, Five Years Ago - PIH or Melasma and How can I Treat It? (Photos)

Five years ago, I had an IPL treatment. Two weeks later, I went skiing because my dermatologist told me it was safe and that there was no problem. Unfortunately, I developed a significant sunburn and soon afterward noticed brown patches that have remained in the exact same areas ever since. Some dermatologists believe this is post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH), while others think it is melasma. I have already had 4 picosecond laser sessions with virtually no improvement. Could this still be PIH after 5 years, or is melasma more likely? If picosecond laser has not helped after 4 sessions, what treatment would you recommend next? Is there still a realistic chance of complete clearance, or should I consider other options such as tranexamic acid, topical therapy, or a different laser?
