I'm on day 6, tray 1 of Invisalign and finding it pretty tough. Iv got about 14 attachments, canines have two attachments on each tooth. I had conventional braces in 2010, treatment lasted about 14 months and they were off by May 2011, I had really good results as my teeth were really overcrowded before with an overbite. I wore my retainer religiously for the first few years as instructed by my ortho as I paid so much money to have treatment, however as the years passed I never got my retainer replace and it was pretty cracked and worn and by the time I noticed that my teeth were shifting again they had moved a fair bit. I had two options, get another retainer made to prevent further movement or have a short course of Invisalign (i7) to get them back in a prime position..I chose the latter and that's where I am now. Will try and keep this short and informative but I wanted to do a review as having both traditional braces and now Invisalign might help some of you decide between the two. I have found Invisalign really tough so far, I can handle the tooth pain/pressure as I remember it well from the wire changes in the past and I guess I'm used to that pain but for me the hardest part has been taking the trays out with the attachments, honestly felt like I was pulling my teeth out each time the first few days this has since got slightly better but still annoying. The main thing that you have to be ready to commit to is the lifestyle change, mealtimes lose their enjoyment as the trays can't be off too long so it's eat then brush, straight back in, this has been particularly hard at work so Iv not been eating at work much at all as it's more hassle than it's worth to take the trays out, I'm hoping this gets easier?! Also as I have the attachments my teeth look exactly the same as they did when I had my traditional braces on (I had the white brackets) so def not invisible. Mouth feels really dry and Iv had a fair few mouth ulcers/irritation from the trays but this is getting better now I'm 6 days in! I don't want to sound negative as Ortho treatment is the best thing I have ever done but I just personally think that Invisalign isn't as easy as I first imagined and needs a lot of commitment/determination/change of social life to see it through, I found traditional braces much easier to cope with. I'm going on holiday in a few weeks and I'm dreading it with these as I like a drink on holiday (not water ????) I think i might ask my orthodontist if i can just wear them overnight for a week and just wear the next tray longer?! Any of you done that before? Updated on 24 Feb 2017: With trays in. Finding it a lot easier now, less discomfort, easier to get trays out. Still finding it a pain to keep taking trays out to eat and brushing all the time but can live with it. Attachments came off my front two teeth so had a trip to ortho this morn to get them glued back on. Will update when Iv had more progress. Updated on 22 Mar 2017: I'm going in next week to change to fixed metal braces. Invisalign didn't work out for me, I probably could have dealt with the persistent dry mouth, lisp, bad breath, constant teeth brushing and the annoyance of having to take it out to eat and drink anything but all that aside the attachments just wouldn't stay on my front teeth, kept chipping or coming off completely. I had to go back to the ortho 3 times in 4 weeks to get them replaced. I will still keep updating this once I get my metal braces but I guess if I was reviewing solely on Invisalign I would say that for me it's been a bit of a disaster, thankfully my ortho is really nice and has let me swap FOC otherwise I would be annoyed and out of pocket. I'm sure Invisalign works great for some people but having worn both traditional braces and Invisalign I would 100% say that the downsides of Invisalign massively outweigh the good, the only good thing about Invisalign is you can take it out, but even then you have these weird things on your teeth and the longer you have it out the more you halt your progress. I will do an update next week about my first day wearing metal braces, I had ceramic white ones before so I am a bit apprehensive about wearing full metal ones but it's only going to be for a maximum of 6 months ???? wish me luck Updated on 28 Mar 2017: Well got my braces fitted this afternoon. Wasn't a bad experience at all, was actually easier having these on than having the Invisalign attachments on! Feels a bit weird and tight but no pain (as of yet) will update in a few days. Updated on 29 Mar 2017: There's no getting away from the fact that braces hurt! Woke up this morning and my teeth are painful, not an unbearable pain but like a constant deep dull ache. The first time you eat with them on feels so weird and it's horrible when all the food gets stuck but I remember from before than this is something you very quickly get used to, swill with water after every meal and most of it gets dislodged. I bought some interdental brushes as these are good to get between the teeth and bigger ones to go between the brackets. Iv also switched to sensodyne toothpaste as my teeth get really sensitive when they move. Other than those few issues that I was fully expecting I'm actually surprised that it's been quite easy. I haven't had any irritation of the gums/lips/tounge so far, the Invisalign trays caused me a lot of irritation in the first couple of days and I had mouth ulcers everywhere. My speech hasn't been affected at all, i had a lisp with Invisalign where my tounge was hitting the plastic. My mouth isn't dry and although I'm sticking to soft food for now while my teeth are tender I can't imagine it will affect my eating too much, I used to just cut things up more when I last had braces rather than bite into stuff and I drink through a straw. Updated on 7 May 2017: Hey! Haven't updated in a while so thought I would post. Had my first tightening/band change the other day and I was expecting my teeth to be really painful the next day after but they weren't at all. Iv still had no irritation from the brackets, I can now eat anything (within reason) again, I just carry a mirror and tooth pick with me everywhere as food does get stuck in the brackets. Am loving my new turquoise bands, I'm not embarrassed of the braces at all, infact I actually quite like them. Can't recommend enough after enduring Invisalign, however I appreciate that everyone is different.
