Despite its name, Venus Freeze works with heat. Radiofrequency energy is delivered deep into the skin in the form of heat, which contracts existing collagen and elastin fibers (the proteins that give skin structure and elasticity) and triggers a natural healing response that promotes the production of more. What happens during a Venus Freeze treatment?

Your provider will ask you to arrive with clean skin (no makeup or moisturizer) and to remove any jewelry near your treatment area. To prep, they will apply a gel—similar to what’s used during an ultrasound—to create a barrier between your skin and the device.

During the noninvasive treatment, your provider will run the handheld Venus Freeze applicator repeatedly over your skin, gradually increasing the heat level. The treatment should last 15–30 minutes, depending on the area treated. Larger areas of the body may take longer.

It shouldn’t hurt or feel too hot; some RealSelf members even compare it to a hot-stone massage. If you feel any discomfort from the heat, your provider can dial it back.

After the treatment, your skin will be a little pink, but you can return immediately to your daily activities without pain, discomfort, or restriction. There’s no real downtime.
