The Reasons Real Patients Prefer One Neurotoxin Over Another

If you’re curious about your options, here’s what RealSelf members said about why they chose Botox, Dysport, Xeomin, or Jeuveau.

On paper, there aren’t hugely significant differences between Botox, Dysport, Xeomin, and Jeuveau. (This unlike their counterparts, injectable fillers, which can be very different.) All four are injectable neuromodulators that work by blocking neurological signals to the muscles, temporarily causing muscle weakness and/or paralyzing them. All four are formulated using a form of botulinum toxin. All last, on average, about three to four months. And yet, despite the similarities among these cosmetic treatments, people have strong opinions on which is their favorite. The same toxin one person says feels heavy and gives them headaches eases the chronic migraines of another person. For some, preference comes down to cost; for others, it’s which makes them feel most natural.

Of course, your dermatologist or plastic surgeon should always be your go-to source when determining which neurotoxin is right for you (and it’s common for most injectors to offer only one or two choices), but if you’re curious about your options (especially if it’s your first time getting neurotoxin injections), here’s what RealSelf members have to say about why they choose to get each particular product and their treatment results. Check out their testimonials, recaps of their positive experiences, and detailed Botox reviews, Dysport reviews, Xeomin reviews, and Jeuveau reviews, below.

Botox reviews

Helps with more than wrinkles

“Even though I wear a nightguard while I sleep, I still grind my teeth, which causes a lot of soreness in my face during the day. The Botox has made a huge difference in calming down my grinding and also has a really beautiful cosmetic effect as well—my face is slimmer and more sculpted.” —@SortsAndMingle

“I didn’t know the [number] of issues Botox helps me with until it wore off during this pandemic! My migraine headaches came back first! The little twitches under my eyes came back (and they are so annoying). The crow’s-feet and the wrinkles on my forehead started to appear worse every day. Every. Single. Day. I appreciate Botox a lot more because I didn’t know the extent Botox in my forehead helped my migraines.”—@ILuvIt

“We ended up doing my forehead and the lines that were forming have completely softened! We also did my masseter for my TMJ, and to date it has been the only thing to alleviate my jaw pain.”—@dahliaann

Looks natural, not frozen

“I’ve been fascinated with Botox, the older I get. I’ve had elevens between my eyebrows for a few years now and only started getting thin forehead lines recently. After I got my implants, I got 20 units of Botox in my glabella (between my brows) for free from Allergan, and I loved it! Not frozen-looking, just nice and smooth. After this, I decided to tackle some of my forehead lines by ‘sprinkling’ some across my forehead, and I love it! Again, not frozen, just smooth and natural, and I’m hooked!” —@LindsayElyse01

“I kid you not, I’ve been carded three times at bars since getting Botox. My advice is to go with someone with amazing reviews and who will listen to exactly what you want. For me, that meant someone who wasn’t going to push me toward a ‘frozen face’ and who didn’t want to do lines I am OK with (for example, I have the beginnings of crow’s-feet but feel they just add to my looking happy, and I had no pressure to do ALL my lines). Would a million percent do it again, and [I] will. So very pleased with the results and am no longer embarrassed to have done something that makes me feel so good about myself.” —@LLG612

Softens frown lines

“I have been getting Botox injections for about two years now. I only get it in the glabella region—those pesky elevens that always made me look tired and angry… even when I felt great! I don’t regret my injections one bit. I go every three to four months, like clockwork, and my results speak for themselves. I may branch out and get injections in other areas of my face, as time goes on, but for now, I’m happy with my 20 units in the frown lines.” —@Nikki757

Dysport reviews

Looks natural and youthful

“I was hesitant to try Dysport, because I was concerned that the results would look unnatural. But I am sorry that I did not try it sooner! The results are natural and subtle. My brow lines are so much smoother, and my skin looks radiant! My eyebrows lifted beautifully, and it has significantly reduced my hooded [lids]. I have had no negative side effects … It is wonderful to have something so affordable and painless that makes such a positive impact on my appearance.” —@Explore1234

“I’m only 39 but noticed [my] forehead wrinkles were horrible and, I thought, irreversible. I was wrong. This is amazing stuff, and my forehead isn’t frozen like with Botox. Dysport is my go-to for age reversal.” —@amber_roberts29

Reduces fine lines

“I have had Botox before and loved the results, so I was interested to try Dysport … I got it for the ‘eleven’ between my eyebrows, and saw results within a day … I’ve had it for a little over a month and LOVE the results. I am SO happy with how natural it looks and how it’s eliminated the 11 lines and helped with some of the other lines immediately above my brows (but not my upper forehead creases).” —@fabeveryday

“Amazing results, as always. Dysport is my go-to for fine line reduction around my eyes and forehead. So easy and works like a charm every time. I like to keep my skin-care routine as simple as possible, so [I get] injections a few times a year, to replace all of the eye creams that don’t do what they claim to do. I’m 37 and have been getting injections since I was 28.” —@pamarcand

“My results are amazing! When I lift my eyebrows, I no longer have wrinkles show up on my forehead and I love it! I no longer have wrinkles in between my eyebrows either! LOVE LOVE LOVE IT!!’“—@mcinzieredd

Longer-lasting than Botox

“I have been getting Dysport in my forehead for about a year now. I originally was getting Botox and wasn’t happy about how quickly the Botox wore off. Since getting Dysport, my results last almost twice as long, and they start to show up after a day or two.” —@ktuft514

Xeomin reviews

Longer-lasting and feels more natural than Botox

“I have severe migraines, and that’s why I tried Xeomin. It’s the pure form of Botox (none of the additives that Botox has). Since having the injections, I wake up feeling refreshed. No headaches so far. The injections feel about like plucking an eyebrow. Not very painful. I have one small bruise under my eye, which is almost gone now. My skin looks and feels amazing. No wrinkles anymore. It started to really take effect about day three, and I would say it’s fully kicked in now. I still have movement (not frozen).” —@kmwinfree1020

“Botox wears off within two months for me, [so my provider] suggested I try Xeomin instead, which lasted about twice as long!!! I’m now a believer [in] Xeomin … Now I can save some money and time [by] not having to go in every two months for the same results. My forehead also didn’t feel as heavy when trying to move, like Botox did. I have so many pros about this product, I’m a very happy customer.” —@snekvind

“I have been getting Botox for several years. I felt like my results were not lasting as long as they typically did. My provider suggested that I try Xeomin. I am so glad I did! Results are amazing! Plus, it is a little cheaper than Botox. Win win!”—@cdimitriou

Improves the look of wrinkles and skin

“A year of military training took a toll on my skin, and I was starting to hate my appearance in photos because of how deep and plentiful my crow’s-feet were becoming … As soon as the procedure was over, I was pain-free and just felt ‘tight’ the rest of the day. Overall, highly recommended! —@cohio92

“I have ‘RBF,’ and I formed two defined wrinkles between my eyebrows that I hated. I had 25 units (five shots), two above eyebrows and one right in the middle. It took less than 10 minutes. Within four hours, the wrinkles were gone and I couldn’t even look mean if I tried. I could not be happier with the results.” —@cmslaney1

“After trying Xeomin, I have not one complaint about the product. It has done wonders to my face. Every day, I get complimented on my skin, thanks to the product.” —@jamesaiden

“I cannot stand the line between my eyebrows. [It] makes me appear angry. I got 30 units of Xeomin and now all of the laugh lines in my forehead are gone. The deep line between my eyebrows on the left side of my face is gone, too. I even lost some laugh lines around my eyes.”—@daisiedog123

Jeuveau reviews

Kicks in quickly

“I had my Jeuveau treatment when it first hit the market and have had a great experience. I noticed a huge reduction in my wrinkles within the first 48 hours and saw full results only five days post-procedure. It has been four months now, and I’m just starting to notice some movement again. I’ll definitely continue using Jeuveau moving forward.”  —@katiemgardner

“Jeuveau kicked in super quick and lasted a little over 5 months!!! I will now be getting Jeuveau every 5 or 6 months. Glad to finally find something that works well for me.”—@2young2beold

Gives more natural-looking and longer-lasting results

“The feeling [with Jeuveau] is more natural. It’s been over two months, and my face feels more relaxed vs. Botox at this point … With Botox, I have felt my facial muscles almost ‘struggling’ to move, resulting in headaches. As hard as I try [with Jeuveau], I still have a natural, relaxed look.” —@bensmommywi

“As a 16-year ‘veteran’ of neurotoxin injections, I was excited to try Newtox! Jeuveau did not disappoint; Jeuveau/Newtox kicked in around day three and has a beautiful smoothing effect, tight but not heavy like Botox. Love it!!!” —@SherriJones

“I have been a Botox recipient for many years. At my appointment in August 2019, my doctor introduced me to Jeuveau. It has been amazing! I seriously think I have seen better results with Jeuveau than with Botox. Also seems longer lasting. With Botox, I needed it every four months. With Jeuveau, I went six full months before needing new injections.” —@LImartinez

“Love the results! My forehead wrinkles are much more shallow, and I still have a very natural look to my face. This is my second round, and the first one lasted about five to six months!” —@AJ305

“Bottom line: I definitely recommend this over Botox. I got Botox injections for my forehead furrows and glabellar lines (“elevens”) three or four times, but I stopped about five years ago because it felt like my forehead was frozen and I could no longer arch my left eyebrow—sounds stupid, but it’s one of my lifelong “signature” facial expressions and I missed being able to do it.

However, my furrows and elevens have only gotten deeper, so I finally gave in and went to a different plastic surgeon to see about trying Botox yet again … she recommended Jeuveau … I was skeptical, but decided to go ahead. I’ve only had one treatment, but I’m very pleased with the results. It looks more natural than Botox, I can still raise my eyebrow, and my forehead doesn’t feel frozen.”—@Tasteful6794
