CoolSculpting Is Upgrading Its Fat Reduction Technology, with CoolSculpting Elite. Here’s What to Know About the Latest Device.

CoolSculpting is upgrading its fat-reduction technology with CoolSculpting Elite. Learn everything you need to know about the latest device.

According to a 2019 poll conducted by the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery, unwanted body fat is the top aesthetic concern for patients—and for the past decade, many of those patients have found a solution in CoolSculpting. As a leader in the fat-reduction space, CoolSculpting uses cryolipolysis technology to freeze and kill targeted areas of fat while leaving the surrounding area unharmed. Now, 10 years after coming to market, the manufacturer is releasing the second generation of its popular device, CoolSculpting Elite.

What is CoolSculpting Elite?

“In my practice, there has always been an interest in safe, noninvasive, and effective ways to treat and eliminate unwanted bulges—with little to no downtime,” says Dr. Mathew Avram, a board-certified dermatologist in Boston. With CoolSculpting Elite, he believes, there’s a fast and convenient solution. The new system uses dual C-shaped applicators to eliminate up to two times more fat, in nine different treatment areas. “The new applicators possess up to an 18% larger cooling area,” the dermatologist explains. “Among these new applicators, there are seven different shapes and sizes, [allowing] for treatment of a range of body areas.” The C-shaped design is able to conform to the body’s natural curves, offering an improved fit over what existed with the last generation of CoolSculpting applicators.

CoolSculpting Elite is currently FDA-cleared to treat fat in nine areas of the body, including the thigh, abdomen, flank, upper arm, underneath the buttocks, and the submental and submandibular regions. Patients can also choose to treat two areas at once with the new technology, which could cut treatment time in half. “A cycle takes roughly 35 minutes per area, so if you are treating left and right flanks, traditionally, you would need two machines or twice the time,” Dr. Avram says. “But CoolSculpting Elite offers us the ability to treat twice the fat in the same amount of time as compared to using one Coolsculpting applicator. So now, within one 35-minute cycle, I can treat your left and right flanks.”

The treatment process of CoolSculpting Elite is otherwise the same process that patients have experienced with the older CoolSculpting technology, and it, similarly, requires no downtime or recovery. “Depending on the treatment area, patients can expect to see results as soon as one to three months post-treatment, but final results may take six months or more,” Dr. Avram advises. “While you will see [as much as] a 20–25% fat reduction in the treated area after a single treatment, it depends on the person and the area being treated, and results can vary patient to patient. But there can always be additional treatments, to reach a desired result.”

With so many advancements in the new Elite system, it may seem against your best interests to opt for the traditional CoolSculpting technology, but the Elite treatment does come with a slightly higher price tag. While first-generation CoolSculpting has an average cost of $2,450, an Elite treatment plan ranges from $3,000 to $4,000, depending on individual needs. Elite is already available in select doctors’ offices, and patients can expect to see a full rollout within the next few months.
