Dr. Thomas A. Mustoe is a Harvard-trained, double board-certified plastic surgeon. The founder of TLKM Plastic Surgery in Chicago, Illinois, Dr. Mustoe has garnered international renown for being a compassionate, highly qualified, and intelligent physician. He takes care to listen closely to each and every one of his plastic surgery patients to understand their motivations for treatment and their desired results.

While he has expertise in a multitude of procedures for the face, breast, and body, he is best known for his artistic eye and skilled hand with facelift, browlift, and rhinoplasty surgery, due to being board certified in both Otolaryngology and Plastic Surgery.

He also frequently performs breast augmentation, mommy makeovers, and tummy tucks (abdominoplasty). In fact, he has lectured and written extensively about his technique of abdominoplasty (tummy tuck) under local anesthesia and IV sedation with accelerated recovery, avoiding the risks of general anesthesia.

Passionate about education and innovation, Dr. Mustoe is a teacher and inventor as well as a surgeon. He has held professor roles at both Washington University School of Medicine and Northwestern University School of Medicine, and was the chief of Northwestern Memorial Hospital’s plastic and reconstructive surgery division from 1991 to 2010.

He frequently shares his expertise in peer-reviewed articles and textbooks, and has published more than 200 pieces in peer-reviewed journals. Dr. Mustoe holds board positions at esteemed medical publications, including Journal of the American College of Surgeons and Wound Repair and Regeneration. He also holds four United States patents related to wound healing and scar treatments, with two more patents pending.

Dr. Mustoe graduated with his bachelor’s and medical degrees from Harvard College and Harvard Medical School, respectively. After completing his internship in Internal Medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, he pursued residencies in three unique specialties: General Surgery, Plastic Surgery (both at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston), and Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery (at Harvard’s Massachusetts Eye and Ear teaching hospital in Boston). He is double board certified by both the American Board of Plastic Surgery and the American Board of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery.

Dr. Mustoe has been honored with many prestigious awards, including a lifetime achievement award from the Wound Healing Society, and being named one of America’s top doctors by Castle Connolly 16 years in a row. He has held leadership positions at several esteemed industry organizations, including a role as treasurer and a member on the board of directors of The American Board of Plastic Surgery, and is a past president of the Wound Healing Society.

When Dr. Mustoe isn’t caring for patients at TLKM Plastic Surgery, he can be found traveling the world to attend various plastic surgery conferences, often as a guest speaker; he has been invited to speak at over 150 engagements, to share his expertise.

Dr. Mustoe is an active member of multiple professional organizations, including the American Council of Academic Plastic Surgeons, the Plastic Surgery Research Council, and the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, as well as a fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He has also served as the advisor to many companies big and small, as well as the United States Food and Drug Administration.
