I had the surgery and have lost 28 pounds in 5 weeks. The lifestyle of changing your eating habits are a nightmare but I hope it gets better. It is a major lifestyle change. I probably could have lost this weight on my own, but I knew that I wouldn't. I had high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol and many health issues. Insurance DID not pay even though I met the medical qualifications.
I have been on this journey for over two years. I began researching two years ago and continually "chickened out." In the Spring 2015, I decided I was ready to commit and attended a seminar. I took my husband and he felt better. I have been approved by insurance and am just waiting for 1/4/16 to get here!
I am a healthy (thank God) 38yr-old nursing student, full-time nurse assistant, and part-time vendor. I've always been a curvy girl, even at the size of 125lbs (years ago, lol), but now at 235lbs, things have gotten out of hand. Honestly, I don't have bad eating habits, and I do drink water, so at fist I couldn't figure out why I kept gaining weight. I mean, it didn't just show up, I remember going to the Dr. for a check-up and every time my weight would gradually go up, maybe just a few pounds at a time. In my opinion, I think I screwed up my metabolism by years of working third shift (7am-7pm). Considering I get off from work in the mornings, I usually go straight to sleep instead of eating breakfast, once I wake up I may eat lunch, and dinner later at work. Some nights, I don't even eat at work because I have already eaten so close to time for me to leave for work. So unless I consciously think about it, breakfast is null and void in my life. Not to mention, I do drink Mt, Dews at times (about 3x a wk). Since I work and attend college, I don't have the time to exercise the way I should because I always figure I could be studying. But in December, I'll be finished with nursing school (Yeah!!!!), so I won't have any excuse about exercising. I would love to get to 150lbs, that's my dream goal. Updated on 24 Aug 2014: I don't think I knew I was this big. That's ok, next year this time will be a different story. Updated on 28 Aug 2014: I'm so disappointed with myself today. I went for my 4 month checkup and I gained an additional 7 pounds, that makes a total of 19 pounds pounds that I have gained since I started going 4 months ago. I wonder has this happened to anyone else, is it a mind thing! Am i eating more and not realizing it because I know soon I won't be able to. I don't feel like I am I am but it's got to be something because I've never gained this much weight in such a short period Updated on 29 Jan 2015: Well I have finally taken my psych evualation, now awaiting approval through my insurance, Im sure it'll go through Updated on 24 Apr 2015: Well now I finally have a date, which is April 30th! I'm excited but I have to be on a liquid diet until then because I gained since I started the process. Also, I've ran into another problem, as of yesterday, I am unemployed but my insurance will take me through the end of the month. Can someone give me some info on what I should do for the insurance part
When patients have good initial weight loss followed by some gain, it often can be controlled by working with a dietitian who truly understands Bariatric Surgery, along with at least 150 minutes per week of exercise. Consider getting an appointment with your surgeon's dietitian and ask about getting back on track.
Intragastric balloons are indicated for treatment of patients who suffer from obesity, which is defined as a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 30 or greater. Based on the information you provided, your BMI is 24.5, which is in the normal range. We have had many patients lose the amount of weight you are looking for through consultation with a dietitian who focuses on weight loss, sometimes in combination with medication therapy. You can also look for a physician near you who is board certified in Obesity Medicine and schedule a consultation.
In general, the LapBand tends to make reflux worse as it is tightened. In patients with reflux, the muscle between the esophagus and stomach tends to be weaker, allowing stomach contents to reflux into the esophagus. When a band is placed, it creates a narrow area just below this muscle, which results in more reflux. This is also seen in patients who have reflux and then undergo a sleeve gastrectomy. The only weight loss operation which will reliably improve reflux symptoms is a Roux-en-Y gastric bypass.
You are not alone. Many patients have found that they did not achieve the results they expected with a gastric band. We perform laparoscopic conversions from band to vertical sleeve gastrectomy on a regular basis. When choosing a surgeon, ask about their experience with conversions, as well as whether they have a comprehensive, long-term program to help you get the most out of your sleeve.
