Highly recommend Dr Cheung. I had lower eyelid surgery and couldn’t be happier with the results. The consultation was thorough and relaxed with a check of the health of my eyes to ensure I was suitable for the procedure. The procedure itself was quick and painless. After the surgery, Dr Cheung was on hand to answer any questions I had and I also had the opportunity to contact an out of hours nurse. The whole experience was professional and unpressurised, a stark contrast to another consultant I had seen who took a picture of my face and proceeded to pull my appearance to pieces and then try and sell me face cream afterwards. Alongside this, Dr Cheung’s fees were considerably cheaper than London based consultants.
I will never ever be able to thank David enough for what he has done for me. Four weeks post operation bilateral lower eyelid blepharoplasty, and it has exceeded my expectations and given me my sparkle back. Friends and family say that it has taken years off me and I am no longer upset when I see myself in the mirror. I would also like to thank the anaesthetist, nurses and staff at the Westbourne Centre for taking such great care of me on the day. It truly was a pleasant experience and not what I had imagined in my own mind. I healed extremely quickly, had no pain and bruising was virtually undetectable within a fortnight. From the initial consultation with David, he made me feel at ease. He took the time to explain everything thoroughly so that I understood exactly what was going to happen on the day of surgery and post surgery. I was a very anxious patient and had plenty of questions for David which he always answered promptly by email. If anyone is looking to get this done, I would say go to David and just get on and do it. I wish I'd had it done years ago.
David is the best in his field in the country. I have only great things to say about his skills and care. He is really thorough in consultation and I couldn’t have been happier with the result. I am so glad that I took a leap of faith to do it.
I have long known that the one elective surgery I would undertake was blepharoplasty, due to drooping lids at a young age. I chose to have a consultation with David after undertaking research. There was no question of me going abroad to have any procedure done. It may be cheaper, but the potential for something to go wrong, the language barrier and aftercare needs meant staying in the UK was paramount. I went to David with thoughts of upper and lower blepharoplasty (dark circles under eyes). David was very friendly, easy to talk to, explaining about every element of the procedures, taking measurements, doing drawings, really listening to me and understanding my reasons for wanting the op. Crucially he explained why I was not a suitable candidate for lowers and why alternatives (e.g. fillers) would also not work for me. Being very risk averse I went away from the first consultation armed with lots of information supplied by David and decided not to go ahead. After 18 further months of deliberation and research I decided to go ahead and booked a further consultation. Shortly afterwards I undertook the procedure at the Westbourne Centre in Birmingham. From start to finish of the whole process I cannot fault all of the staff I encountered. All so very polite, friendly and caring, putting me at ease. Throughout the procedure David was his usual calm, reassuring, friendly and humorous self. I had approximately 13mm taken from each upper. I have a medium tolerance to pain and can honestly say the most painful part was administering local anaesthetic to the inner corners of the area nearest my eyebrows (and even that wasn’t so bad). During the operation I experienced no pain, just a sensation that something was happening around the area. I concentrated on staying calm and listening to David's eclectic operating music list and chatting to him and the theatre staff. Post surgery I was very well briefed on what to expect and instructions to follow (which I did to the letter). The rest of the day after surgery was uncomfortable but after that, no problems. It actually looked worse than it felt. I am now 5 months post op and the results of the work are nothing short of amazing. I no longer look tired and angry, I wear only the lightest of eye makeup to achieve the look that I couldn’t achieve before and it has bolstered my self esteem no end. Thank you so much David, I would (and have) recommended you to several people for a job well done. My only wish is that I’d done it sooner!
The consultation was extremely detailed, and lasted over an hour with him meticulously measuring and checking the structure of my eyelids. This was was followed by him explaining the anatomy of the eyelids and explaining the risks of surgery carefully. As a specialist in Ophthalmology, he was clearly an expert. He has a very relaxed & non-judgemental demeanour. Following the consultation, he was very happy & quick to communicate via email and answer all my questions to make sure that I was 100% sure about everything. He was very efficient and was able to offer me a surgical date as early as 3 weeks after the initial consultation. The surgery was with local anaesthetic, and very quick (maybe 30-40 minutes) and casual, it almost felt like getting your hair cut. And the nurses were very friendly and helpful. The major downtime after the surgery was just a few days. Although swelling persisted for three months, the results after look good and natural. He clearly has an understanding of the "natural asian look", unlike many others who seemed to want to try to westernize the eyes. I highly recommend Dr Cheung for any cosmetic eye surgery.
Mr Cheung was lovely! I had a upper and lower lid blepharoplasty under twilight sedation at the Edgbaston hospital 6 months ago. I felt that I was in safe hands after my friend's mom needed cancer surgery to her eyelid at Russells Hall Hospital and I saw her result. I had a remote Zoom consultation with David last month. I so wanted to show him what the final result was but this pandemic put a stop to that. I so want to show my pictures and although this experience has done wonders for my confidence, I'm still not brave enough! Anyway thanks so much David!
Right from the initial consultation, David put my mind at ease, explaining all of my options clearly, along with pro's and con's for each. There was no pressure at any point to opt for any of the procedures, and all consultations were very relaxed. We had a few consultations leading up the surgery (Frontalis Suspension), each one giving me more confidence that I'd chosen the right Surgeon. The day of the surgery was again, very relaxed, which eased the slight nerves. David and his team were great throughout, providing commentary throughout so I knew exactly what was going on at all times. The surgery itself was slightly uncomfortable, but the only pain was from the initial anesthetic injections. Post surgery, I was given all of the medical ointments that I'd need, along with some advice for the following few days. The package also included a number of follow-up aftercare appointments, which again, David was great with, explaining each time the healing process, and what I could expect between the current and the next appointment. Overall I'm 100% happy that I made the right choice in choosing David, and wouldn't hesitate to recommend him to anyone needing surgery, or just a friendly consultation to explore their options.
I cannot rate Mr Cheung highly enough. I’ve just looked at my before and after pictures and I am so, so pleased! I knew I was in great hands from my first consultation - David was knowledgable, kind and honest when explaining my options. He is fantastic. Thank you, David.
From the outset I felt totally at ease and confident with the advice and care I was given. Dr Cheung was friendly yet professional and responded to my emails promptly. The operation and recovery went smoothly and I am delighted with the results 3 months post op.
Hi, my name is Ali. I did alot of research prior to booking a consultation with Dr David Cheung as i wanted someone who was an expert in their field and not just a general surgeon. I am pleased with my Blepharoplasty result which David carried out in August 2018. The operation was relaxing as it could be. I had the operation under local which was bearable but was never going to be an enjoyable experience! I am so pleased i had the operation done as it was something i had been debating for a while as i my heavy lids were getting me down at the age of 37. My scars healed quicker than i was expecting. David was professional and friendly throughout the whole process. He answered any emails in a prompt and timely manner. He was also contactable via telephone. If you are thinking about upper eyelid David is the surgeon for you. I would'nt rule out further surgery in the future if required and David would be my first port of call for anything eye related. Thank you David!
Hi greetings from the UK. Yes you can develop contralateral consecutive ptosis in your previously operated eye but typically it's likely to be minimal. You can ask your surgeon to try to simulate it by performing a phenylephrine test. Best Wishes David
Hi greetings from the UK. No a non incisional suture technique won't help you. Your situation is very difficult to treat predictably. What you're talking about is trying to create a new surgical crease lower than your current higher crease that you don't like, ablating the previous crease, herniating what available orbital fat you've got left to re inflate the superior sulcus hollowing and then hoping that your previously created surgical crease that you don't like doesn't reform. It's technically challenging, moderate in risk and unpredictable I'm afraid and most sensible oculoplastic surgeons would advise to leave them alone. Best Wishes David
Hi. Greetings from the UK. Just to say that yes we do ask our patients to cease aspirin prior to oculoplastic surgery if possible especially for our higher risk operations when excessive bleeding would be dangerous e.g. skin graft surgery. However for our patients in whom they cannot safe stop their aspirin safely e.g. coronary artery stent patients requiring long term aspirin, we would still offer them the option of surgery whilst still on the aspirin 75mg once a day but just warn them that there would be a slightly greater risk of haemorrhage. Good luck!
Hi greetings from Birmingham! It depends very much on what you're trying to achieve. If you're happy with the position of your brows but just want increased upper lid show then an upper lid blepharoplasty operation is a pretty reliable way of increasing upper lid show. Ideally I would recommend that you seen an oculoplastic surgeon who will examine your eyelids properly and find out why your eyelids still look hooded. It may be due to the position of your orbital septum insertion, orbital fat and your skin crease being low and if this is the case then an anchor blepharoplasty to change these factors would likely work well for you. Indeed this is more likely to be the case if you find that upper eyelid tape works for you. Sometimes my patients attend my clinic bringing eyelid tape with them. If there is a particular look that they like with the tape in, then I try to recreate that surgically. Of course hooding may be due to brow ptosis causing upper eyelid skin hooding and if this is the case and you're unhappy with your eyebrow position then sure, redo brow lifting may be a preferred option instead. Good luck and best wishes David
Hi. Greetings from Birmingham. Yes your oculoplastic surgeon is right. In patients with minimal amounts of ptosis the margins for success are much narrower. i.e. for the patient to be happy they've got to be pretty perfect. Any minimal overcorrection or under correction and they're more likely to be disappointed. No I wouldn't agree that the risk of disappointment outweighs the chances of success and a happy patient though but the risk to benefit profile is more adverse though for reasons described above. Treatment options include doing nothing (safest option), lid elevating drops (difficult to get in the UK as not licensed currently) and surgery. There are multiple ptosis operations with pros and cons for each approach. No- simple blepharoplasty surgery wouldn't work for you. Ensure that the surgeon you see does a lot of ptosis surgery as your primary operation is usually your best chance for long term success and also ensure that he/she does a phenylephrine test too in your surgery planning. Good luck. David
