Porcelain Veneers - Carrollton, TX
I felt like my tooth was ugly and looked abnormal. After the visit I felt a self ego boost. I first got to know Dr. Chuck when I started doing his advertising. I was so impressed by the way he treated his patients I decided to become one. I hate the dentist and he made me feel at ease. I got a nice warm blanket and got to pick a movie to watch while they worked on my teeth which helped me not focus on what they were doing. Im super scared of shots and when he started I didnt even feel it. As they worked on my teeth for over an hour they put lip balm on my lips to help moisturize while they worked on my teeth. The whole procedure never hurt once and he had a nice soft touch. My front tooth was messed up from a previous dentist experience and now no one can even tell it is fake. Thank you Dr. Medearis.
Yes there are many types of crowns. The circular band you mentioned is caused by one of two things. The vast majority of the time the band showing is the metal coping of a porcelain veneer crown or PVC. The PVC has been the work horse for natural appearing crowns for decades. The crown gets its name because the porcelain is baked on or "veneered" over the metal crown. Traditionally the metal has a closer fit to the tooth than porcelain alone can achieve thereby reducing recurrent decay or cavities under a crown which translates to longer life. A dentist can eliminate the metal band showing by preparing a esthetic margin at the time of the intial crown prep appointment or by placing the margin subgingival (belove the edge of the gum). However this offends leads to the second cause of a dark band showing which is caused by the optical differences in tooth verses porcelain. By far the best solution is the new all ceramic crowns which have optical properties very close to natural tooth and can be indistinguishable from adjacent natural teeth to the naked eye.
A dental crown covers all five exposed surfaces of a tooth. The crown must fit well to chew for proper digestion, comfort, and harmony with the other teeth, gums, bone and muscle. First the tooth must be prepared or reduced in size to allow for thickness of the crown and remove all diseased tooth structure. Then the exact dimensions must be captured, Currently there are two methods to accomplish this capturing. The oldest, most widely utilized technique involves taking an impression utilzing a material that closely adapts to the prepared tooth in the mouth. The second method involves optically scanning the tooth. Both of these dental techniques typically occur in the first appointment. The crown is then fabricated using this impression whether physical or virtual. This can happen anytime after the impression and can take from minutes to weeks. Some dental practices prepare and seat crowns the same day by having a lab on premises or having a milling machine on premises, Very few dental practices produce crowns the same day. The majority of dentists have commercial laboratories produce the crowns offsite. A second visit is needed to seat the crown. The first visit for a crown is usually concluded with the fabrication of a temporary crown. Then the patient returns once the real crown is received from the lab to seat the real crown. Thus typicallly a crown takes two visits.
It depends on the size of the space. There is an engineering proof called the Golden Principle which simply state says the width a tooth can be created and still look natural is dependent on the length. It is important that the veneer edges go under the gum a certain distance on the space side Dependent on how big the space is. Another idea is to cut some off the outside of the front teeth and bond or veneer the laterals and then bond the two centrals. This will create a beautiful balanced smile when done by a master cosmetic dentist.
