What does Smartlipo have to do with Shiatsu Massage?

SmartLipo MPX™ and Shiatsu – A Synergistic Approach to Well-Being
By Dr. Daniel Levy, Cosmetic Dermatologist

In the Medical Spa, I perform a laser-assisted liposuction, SmartLipo MPX™, to sculpt areas of the body which are resistant to diet and exercise. This treatment is currently the safest and most efficient method of body contouring. The key differences of this method as compared to traditional liposuction are:

  • the procedure is performed under local anesthesia (each area is infused with a diluted anesthetic thus eliminating the inherent risks and downtime associated with general anesthesia),
  • the use of micro-instruments (2.4 mm in diameter as compared to the traditional 4-5 mm cannulas)
  • the use of a “SmartLipo” laser  which adds a smoothing effect to the skin

Despite this minimally-invasive approach and advanced laser technology, the human body instinctively reacts to the procedure by producing edema, or swelling. This swelling phase of healing is most acute during the first six weeks. However, in some people, it can last 3-6 months.
In the past we’ve used a technology called VelaShape to stimulate lymphatic drainage and reduce this swelling; Velashape is a non-invasive body contouring technology which emits radiofrequency and infrared energy.

However, during the past year, we took this a step further and partnered with the highly-skilled, Shiatsu certified massage therapists in The Spa. We found that this direct, hands-on approach proved to be the optimal post-procedure treatment modality. Rather than merely stimulating the treated area, the Shiatsu specialists methodically open up channels of circulation in the extremities and other sites distant to the treated area. This holistic approach not only makes intuitive sense, but has also proven to be the most satisfying and effective post-procedure treatment for patients who have had the SmartLipo treatment.
I recently submitted an abstract about the unique combination of Shiatsu after Smartlipo, and this was accepted for publication by the American Society of Dermatologic Surgery (November 2011).

[SIDEBAR: How Shiatsu Works]
“Shiatsu is one of the most effective massage modalities that I’ve ever come across,” says Lead Massage Therapist Giuseppe Cappalonga. “Unlike traditional massage, Shiatsu addresses the cause of the problem rather than just the symptoms. The results I’ve seen with SmartLipo patients who’ve received Shiatsu have been profound. Shiatsu facilitates lymphatic drainage and assists in eliminating the puffiness and bloating following this procedure. It’s the ideal treatment for not only those who undergo SmartLipo, but anyone who suffers from edema either from a surgical procedure or from traveling frequently.”

Medical Spa granted full accreditation by AAAHC (Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care)
Accreditation is a voluntary process through which an ambulatory health care organization is able to measure the quality of its services and performance against nationally recognized standards. The accreditation process involves self-assessment by the organization, as well as a thorough review by the AAAHC's expert surveyors, who are themselves, ambulatory health care professionals. The AAAHC Certificate of Accreditation is a symbol of high-quality care. Organizations who have been granted this accreditation have demonstrated their commitment by measuring up to the AAAHC's high standards.
