Restylane to Treat Dark Circles Under the Eyes

by

A common concern for many people is dark circles under the eyes. Dark circles under the eyes make people look tired and old.

Why are there dark circles under the eyes?

There are a number of reason why we see dark circles under the eyes. When we are born we have a fat pat directly under the eyes. As we age the fat pad moves downward into the upper cheek, leaving a hollowing under the eyes. This can create a shadow and lead to the appearance of a dark circle. In addition to volume loss, dark circles under the eyes can be a result of poor diet, lack of hydration, not enough sleep, allergies, or genetics.

How are dark circles treated?

If dark circles are caused by volume loss which occurs naturally as we age, it can be addressed by restoring the lost volume with a dermal filler. Dr. Alex recommends Restylane in this area because Restylane provides enhancement without drawing too much water in the skin (as in Juvederm) which can lead to a puffy appearance. While a puffy appearance may be desired in the lower face, puffiness under the eyes can be just as bad as, or worse than, dark circles themselves.

What is Restylane and what does it do?

Restylane is a dermal filler used to restore volume loss in the face. Similar to Juvederm, Voluma, and Volbella, Restylane is made of hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring substance found in the skin that binds 1,000 times its weight in water. This also provides a high level of safety because hyaluronic acid can be dissolved in the case of an adverse effect, which is not the case with certain other fillers such as Radiesse, Sculptra, or Bellafill. Restylane is placed directly on the bone under the eye. This brings all of the structures upward to the surface, restoring the lost volume and providing a youthful and refreshed appearance.

When do you see results with Restylane?

The great thing about Restylane is that the results are seen right away. With any injection, there is a risk of swelling and this is frequently seen with Restylane. However, most people enjoy the appearance of the swelling. It is important to understand that the final results are seen approximately two weeks later once all of the swelling has subsided.

How long does Restylane last?

Some fillers such as Voluma can last up to two years. However, there is a lot of motion on the face around the areas of the eyes. For this reason, the results of filler treatments in this area do not last as long. Most people enjoy the results of their Restylane treatment under the eyes for approximately six months. At that time, a maintenance treatment is recommended.

What are the side effects of a Restylane treatment?

With any injection, there is a risk for pain, bleeding, bruising, swelling, redness, and infection. At A E Skin we take special precautions to minimize the risks of such adverse effects. For example we always apply complimentary numbing cream on the area before the treatment to maximize your comfort. We also provide complimentary laser bruise treatment as early as the next day. The area under the eyes contains many veins and has an increased risk for bruising compared to other areas. Bruising can last up to two weeks, but after a laser treatment, most bruises resolve within one to three days.
