FDA Report on LASIK Confirms Safety and Effectiveness with High Rates of Patient Satisfaction

Results reported by the FDA on a long awaited comprehensive prospective, multi center study on the safety and efficacy of LASIK have been released.

The study surveyed patients regarding their visual symptoms and the quality of life before as well as three months after LASIK surgery. The FDA confirms that over 95% of the survey respondents achieved 20/20 or better binocular vision. The study also indicated that the prevalence of symptoms such as ghosting of images, glare, halos and star bursting did not increase post operatively after LASIK surgery and that in fact patients with ghosting actually decreased from 33% prior to surgery to 6% afterwards.

The data confirm what patients and their refractive surgeons have known for many years: that LASIK is a safe and effective treatment for myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism. Approximately 16,000,000 LASIK procedures have been performed in the United States over the past two decades and the collective experience of the community of refractive surgeons suggests that excellence in results continue to improve beyond three months resulting in even greater patient satisfaction.

As Medical Director of CRSP, I am very gratified to share this information with patients who are interested in Laser Vision correction but have lingering concerns about safety.
