I have always been a little self conscious about...

I have always been a little self conscious about my eyelids because they were a very shallow double eyelid which appeared to look like a single eyelid, making them seem small. I have always wished for them to be bigger; tried tapes, glue, it was just too much of a pain and a hassle. I've been thinking about having the surgery done, and my mom was even pushing it. I decided to get this done before my wedding. I did a lot of research myself in regards to eyelid surgery techniques (the temporary sewn thread technique vs the permanent muscle anchoring technique) and knew that I wanted a permanent solution. I had my lids done in Toronto, my home town. I thought about going to a foreign country, but I was weary about going to China or Hong Kong to have it done (as my mom pushed for, as I am from Hong Kong) as it would have been cheaper, but I felt that wasn't worth the risks, and I believe the sewn thread under the lid is the more popular surgery. I realize it's significantly more expensive, but trust me; you don't want your doctor halfway across the world when your face looks beaten up. I had my eyelids done with a millimeter of skin removed to bring my lashes up. Very minimal pain, a lot of swelling though that settled with religious ice packs and sitting up elevated (the eyelid is probably the thinnest skin on your face and is extremely sensitive so it's expected that you get a lot of swelling and bruising). By week 1, all the bruising was gone, but still a little swollen, but by end of week 3, it looked a lot better. Only the Asian people that I worked with saw that I had my eyelids done; the Caucasians didn't have a clue. My eyelids settled by 6 months. No scarring noted on my lid (that vanished quite quickly, thanks to the doctor). I ended up having a revision a year later because of asymmetry; not due to the skill of the doctor, but because my eyes were asymmetrical. The same physician did the revision (he took another sliver of skin out of one eye) and they are now perfect; the crease is symmetrical and actually does not make it obvious that my eye shape is asymmetrical. Healing process was the same. I get many compliments; people think they look incredibly natural, and don't even realize I had surgery done until I point it out. I am extremely happy with my results. And yes, my eyes definitely look bigger with the lid surgery, and yes, I was so happy to throw out all that eye tape and eye glue!

Dr. Tong is an amazing doctor. I work in the medical field and can really appreciate what professionalism means. It was a little hard to obtain a consultation, but when I did, it was great. I noticed whenever I went to the office, there was only at most 1 other patient in the waiting room, which I really appreciate for the sake of privacy. Dr Tong was extremely professional when I met him; he was kind, very patient, informative, and always asked in the end if I had any other questions. He was never pushy. He first asked me for reasons why I wanted to do it; he really tries to understand things from your perspective. Then he explained to me that he only does the permanent muscle anchoring technique to create the double eyelid, and gave me the pros and cons. He explained also patients ask for two types of results; the natural looking Asian result, or the more unnatural Caucasian looking result. I made it clear I wanted a natural looking result; he wasn't pushy and respected my decision. He then showed me with a stick on what it looked like. In the end, he asked if I had any other questions, and referred me to his secretary for a quote. I was happy with the consultation. I ended up going back for a follow up and confirmation and had my surgery done early April. 199 Avenue Road is a great office, with 3 floors; first two of beautifully renovated offices, and the top floor is the surgical area; 4 surgical suites, a pre and post op recovery area, overnight accomodations, and change rooms. Dr. Tong and his staff are great; very professional and great bedside manner. I am aware his anesthesiologists are sourced from Toronto East General and his nurses have other jobs; the one I had was a nurse from Toronto Western. Me being in the medical field really appreciated that these staff members had acute/critical care skills and would be able to handle an emergency. I also really appreciated that they were very good with patient privacy; with curtains drawn at all times, and to limit the amount of talk that can be heard about other patients. Dr. Tong saw me a little before surgery to explain to me what was going to happen, drew some lines with a marker, and once again asked if I had any questions. I was then wheeled to the operating room. During the surgery, it was only an IV sedation because Dr. Tong required me to sit up several times and open my eyes so he could gauge his work; I remember in my groggy state, the nurses said "Oh, that looks so good! I want you to do that to my eyes too, Dr. Tong" and then him saying to the nurse, "you don't need the surgery, you already have double eyelids". I had no complications; some swelling and bruising of course, but that quickly subsided within one week, and looked pretty good by 3 weeks. I had several follow up visits where Dr. Tong was very welcoming and very happy with the results. I actually healed relatively quickly. There is no scarring at all (very faint and only I can see it) and my eyelids settled by 6 months (expected 1 yr). At the one year mark, I did end up having a revision; nothing to do with Dr. Tong's work, but it was due to the shape of my eye, and the lid was not symmetrical. Dr Tong saw that and was very willing to do the revision. Once again, on the 2nd surgery day, he was very warm and this time took a lot of time to look at my eye, draw where he was going to cut, to make sure the amount of skin he took off was just perfect. The results were perfect and symmetrical. Once again, no scarring, no complications. If I were to have surgery again, I would choose him as my doctor. I am very impressed by his professionalism, skill and beside manner. He was always very patient and never tried to rush you or get you out the door. I would recommend him to everybody.
