I had a problem of abdominal hernia and umbilical...

I had a problem of abdominal hernia and umbilical hernia. After much consideration, I decides to do a muscle repair cum TT and got it done on Tues, 20 Mar 2012. I am so anxious to recover, but I also don't want to stress my body out. I walked a little a day post op and is able to sit longer periods and walk longer now. The two drains were taken out of my on day 3 post-op. I feel swell and I feel like my pelvic and hips are swollen. I can also feel sensation of water oozing in my central abdomen area. I am worried about seroma. Can't wait for the recovery to be OVER!!! Some times, I wonder if this is all worth it. At least loose skin and muscles can't kill, right? I was already running 7-8km 3-4 times every week and I was enjoying my fit self. I don't think I will get back my fitness again.

Great review?

My rating:

Dr has been clear with his instructions so far and quick with his response. He has also been very supportive so far. Just hope he was more empathetic at times.

Hi!! I am doing really good! So u just had a surgery recently? My TT is 1 year old. I am back to my active self and doing most things I was doing prior to my op. I try not to do to many crunches as I can still feel the stitches. I think I will need 1-2 more scar treatments and hopefully, it will be done with! How r u feeling?

I'm 15 days out and a little portion just split. Plus I just started getting crampy. Maybe I did too much in terms of housework. My hubby isn't helping. Keeps saying he's busy.

Where did you do your Tt at?
lhy74 25 Mar 2013
I did it with Dr Wu. Which part split? 15 days still very short. Need at least 6 weeks to feel a bit stronger.

Scar has some keloids and is still undergoing scar treatment. I did my op in a private hospital as my surgeon is in private practice. It's overall healing very well and I am back to exercising regularly. Yes, I claimed 100% of the cost of surgery and pre-post op cost.

Hi Edcia, I didn't initially opt for TT because I didn't have so much loose skin that I felt warrant a major operation like a TT. However, I wanted to repair my abdominal and umbilical hernia because of its potential complications in future. U see, my intestines were already pushing through my umbilical hole and causing some discomfort. I tried to look for general surgeons who would do the job for me with minimal scarring. But they all told me that they had to do a vertical incision at my torso to reach the muscles. That would leave a terrible scar (in my opinion) and was not acceptable to me. As such, I resorted to a TT.

Once I decided on a TT, I was still half hearted because its a major surgery with a lot of trauma to the body. I didn't know what could happen or how the recovery would be. Anyway, I took the plunge trusting that so many people had done it before me and turned out well.

The first 2 weeks were the worst because of the difficulty in movement, the stitches, the drains, and definitely the swelling!!! By the evening, I had to lie down so that the swell could go down a bit. I also remember the swell is mainly above my incision, stretching the skin above my incision further. I almost thought stretch marks were going to develop. So, I applied loads of scar prevention cream, etc twice daily to sooth the stretch and lie down by the evening. It took a month for the swell to come down to an acceptable level.

Exercise wise, I did some light hand weights by the 2nd week and started cycling on machine by week 4 for abt 30mins. Lucky for me, I didn't get additional swelling after exercising. But I don't push myself too hard. Now I am 6.5 weeks. Everything is back to normal, almost. :)

Hi lhy74,
So glad that I have found someone with similar condition as me. How is your scar now? Is it healing well? Just curious if you have the surgery done in a private or government hospital? Did you make a claim on your insurance as it is a medically procedure?
Thanks!

Thank you! Are u really from Singapore? I thought I was the only one here coz I don't seem to see other Sg TT patients putting up reviews or posts. The swelling is killing me! Urgh!

We all go through the "what the heck did I just do to myself" stage in those first few weeks! I promise it gets better! :)

Thank you! I sure hope so! If not, it's so not worth it. I am just trying to do a bit more everyday and work towards eventual full recovery. I should be taking out some stitches next tues. Hope it all turns out well.
