I had been thinking about this procedure for years...
The procedure itself was exactly as described by my doctor. I was ready for the soreness and the feeling that I'd done 6,000 sit-ups in 5 minutes (that stays with you a few days). Dr. Shaw had me stay in the surgery center for 2 days, which allowed him to ensure that I was okay to go home and got me through the initial phase of anesthesia wearing off. He told me up front to expect that it would be 2 weeks before I felt back to myself and was able to completely straighten up when I walked. He was exactly right. I don't think I could stress more how important I think it was to my recovery that I really understood what to expect beforehand; and then Dr. Shaw and his staff reiterated it each time I went into see them.
My drains came out at 13 days, and boy was I ready! But I appreciate that my doctor kept them in until he was comfortable that I would not have any complications from fluid that could happen if they came out before my body was ready. I was religious about wearing my compression garment for as long as he told me to, and will still do so if I have a day where I feel like I have been doing a little too much and have some swelling.
I am 12-weeks post surgery now, and continue to be convinced that I made the right decision, with the right doctor, for this procedure.
The best advice that I could give anyone considering this procedure is to make sure that you have a comfort level for exactly what to expect from your physician. I'd make sure you look at pictures of their work, and ask a lot of questions. If you are able to talk to others that the doctor has worked on, that's great - my doctor had performed this procedure on a couple of his own staff, so getting their opinion was great. And the other thing that was hugely beneficial to me was getting the opinion of the nursing staff at the surgical center that I was having the procedure done at. Because they work with most of the surgeons in my area, they definitely had opinions on what they have seen and who they believe has the best outcomes.

Dr. Shaw and his entire team were incredible. When I went for my very first consultation, I had a comfort level I did not expect, and actually scheduled my surgery that very day. He was very clear and concise about what to expect before, during and after the procedure, and what I should be prepared for so I had no surprises. Dr. Shaw had me stay at the surgical center for 2 night to ensure that I was okay to go home. All of the nurses at the surgery center (who work with a variety of surgeons) said this was an integral part of my early recovery and told me that Dr. Shaw was one of the few who do that, but they also said Dr. Shaw has the very best outcomes. Not surprising from my perspective. My results are nothing less than phenomenal, and the procedure and recovery were exactly as described to me by Dr. Shaw. He and his team were instrumental in my recovery in that any time I had a question, they were there to answer it for me. There are actually not enough words for me to describe how great it feels to look in the mirror now, thanks to Dr. Shaw. I highly, highly recommend him. He and his team are knowledgable, caring, available, professional, and the very best cheerleaders when you need them to be. Don't wait to go see him if you are considering this procedure.
