At 26 I finally made the decision to go ahead with...

At 26 I finally made the decision to go ahead with rhinoplasty after a friend of mine got her nose done. I was able to talk with her about her experience and see how happy she was with the results. She gave me the name of her surgeon (Dr. Daniel Shapiro) as well as another surgeon in Scottsdale that she had a consultation with. I knew that this was going to be the hard part of the cosmetic surgery process, finding a surgeon who would be willing work with my type-A personality and meticulous attention to detail that comes with my profession as a registered nurse.

Thankfully, I was lucky enough to find such a surgeon, Dr. Daniel Shapiro. After five minutes into the consultation I knew that he was who I was going to have perform my rhinoplasty. There were a few things that really stood out to me from that initial visit. The first being that after introducing himself, he asked me what my ethnic heritage was and I explained to him that I had Czechoslovakian, Norwegian, and Danish roots. This question made me excited because it told me that Dr. Shapiro has an eye for the facial structures of different cultures and that whatever changes he was going to make to my nose would still be in harmony with my natural facial features.

The next thing that Dr. Shapiro asked me was what I didn’t like about my nose. After explaining to him how I thought it was too wide and was too round without definition in the tip, he told me that I was lucky because all the things I didn’t like were fixable. He went on to explain that if he didn’t think that he could correct something or didn’t think it was appropriate to fix something he would not accept the client, which shows integrity.

After Dr. Shapiro explained the techniques he would use to help reshape my nose he asked if I had any more questions. I told him that yes; I actually had a list of about 20 questions/concerns that I would like to go over as well as pictures of different celebrities whose noses I liked. I was relieved when he told me that he had as much time as I needed and I that I would not be rushed. We went through my list of questions and concerns as well as the pictures with me pointing out things that I liked and did not like in different noses in the pictures. All the while Dr. Shapiro would make notes on what I was saying as well as give his own feedback. This is when I knew that his attention to detail was extraordinary and that he was going to work with me and my vision, as opposed to coming up with his own.

Leaving that consultation I knew that Dr. Shapiro was my surgeon of choice.

On my next visit I got to see Dr. Shapiro’s manipulation of “before” pictures that had been taken on my initial visit. While digital manipulation can never show an exact result, I got a taste for what I could expect after my rhinoplasty. On that second visit I had yet more questions for Dr. Shapiro who listened carefully and together we continued to make notes and edits to his surgical plan.

From the time I scheduled my surgery to the surgery itself there was large gap, (I had to find time to fit it around my work schedule) and as you can imagine doubts and worries worked their way into my thoughts. Because of this, I knew that I needed to schedule another appointment with Dr. Shapiro before surgery. Dr. Shapiro’s staff was wonderful and very supportive and it was not a problem getting a last minute appointment. At that appointment we were able to address my final concerns.

In making the decision to go through with rhinoplasty I had to be assured that my surgeon and I were on the same page because I was expecting nothing less than perfection for my nose. My biggest fear was that I would come through surgery with an unsatisfactory result; that people would immediately notice I had had a nose job and ask me why. I am happy to say that my new nose is perfect! I could not be happier with my results and I have Dr. Shapiro to thank. Because he took the time to really listen and work with me, the nose that was achieved exceeded my vision and was worth every penny. Dr. Shapiro’s work is refined and meticulous and he strives for perfection just as much, if not more, than his patient’s desire it. I could not have asked for a better surgeon!
