Most of my family grow fantastic beards and as a kid I can remember my father always rocking the beard. Like playing guitar I decided having a beard is something I wanted and never was going to compromise but unlike guitar genetics has a hand in getting one and I eventually came to the conclusion I wasn't getting a beard. I tried all the crazy things you read online about increasing facial hair growth all of them to no avail, I was also a teenager in the age before webmd or having the knowledge of seeing if it's something with my hormones. I believed I was past the chance for all those other "tricks" to growing a beard I had pretty much gave up on the idea of growing a beard until I by some weird chance stumbled on facial hair transplants. That started me down a road of research on the practice and how to go about seeing if something like that was right for me, I read about the two main ways hair can be transferred from the back of your head near the base of your hair(due to that being the part of your hair that isn't influenced by your levels of hormones) less likely to succumb to falling out. Eventually I started the process of searching for a place that would do the procedure and I was living in Asheville NC at the time so finding places that were close was ideal. I talked to several old school hair restoration places and some didn't even know what I was talking about while other I talked to flat out told me they could hire techs from out of town to do the procedure but there would be no support for the post operation period. That didn't sit well with me so I began looking out of state for a practice that offered excellent care and results I mean this is my face I was looking to change in a sense. Eventually finding one that I saw a procedure done online and several online testimonials I ready for a trip to Miami Florida and a doctor named Dr. Bared, I found a hotel close and got up early the day of the procedure to figure out the details. Before I even got there they had me a person responsible for answering any of my questions discussing prices options and even advice on what to ask to other places( always shop around and don't be worried they know we all do it and it makes sense) Dr. Bared was an associate of one of the leading facial hair transplant surgeons in the country Dr. Epstein and part of the same company I believe called found hair, seemed like a good solid choice. The day of the procedure went well I was treated extremely well and Dr. Bared's staff was top knotch, they treated me to lunch since it was a lengthy operation and it was fairly pain free as well. Roughly 6 hours later face swollen and numb back of my head the same I had a full face of hair, I had the jaw line and side burns because I had a naturally strong goatee and mustache. A lot of places talk graft numbers and mine was 1700 when it was all said an done but grafts can have more than one hair follicle to them an almost all of mine had atleast two or more on them. I was given instructions on how to spend the first few nights since you can actually rub the grafts out in the first few nights sleeping with a pillow, so sleeping with your head up to reduce swelling and chances of loosing grafts was part of my instructions. Followed them to the letter I stayed there over night and went in to receive my first post op instructions and to see how everything was healing after two days. Then I went back to Carolina an I still keep my head elevated just to be safe and all went well, one thing I forgot to mention is I've had adult cystic acne most of my teen and young adult life so if you take medication for that consult the person doing the surgery there are special instructions for someone with that but as I wasn't taken any meds I didn't say anything, my normal routine for washing my face twice a day and changing my bed sheets and pillow case every other day does the trick for keeping that away. Fast forward 3 months after the crusts of the procedure are long gone and the hair that was used to put the grafts in have fallen out have falling out mine were starting to grow in and in good number as well. Also every 3rd month near the date of my surgery the office of Dr. Bared emails me checking on my progress and due to a location to NY they ask for photos of the area the grafts were places and all seems to be going good. After 6 months the hair were still thin but growing in number by the month I did have a few hair follicles fall out skin and all but anytime I had a concern I would email the office and they'd respond quickly with a word of advice or to reassure me. And it has continued up to 8 months where I am at now I just shaved two months of growth off for the first time and have had a lot of compliments on my beard, I did get a bald patch to a surprise cystic acne attack but it's easily concealed and makes it look more natural I believe. Some of my closest friends that I felt comfortable telling I had it done do like to pick on me but at this point my beard rivals theirs so I just throw a joke right back. All an all I'm happy I have hair to grow a beard more than I did before, I wish at the time of surgery I'd been more specific on the lines as I feel like it's alittle higher than I'd like near the jaw line but when grown out it doesn't look weird. I'm also at the point were it's hard being patient waiting for the hair to thicken as it seems to go in spurts. I would recommend this surgery to anyone who can't grow a natural beard and wants one, it is expansive as its like getting a nose job or any other facial cosmetic surgery. I look forward the 1 year mark that's when you can have a real good idea of what the real results of the procedure are and hopefully it's what I've always wanted as I paid a lot for it(haha)
