I went to see Dr. Barnthouse on April 20, 2015,...

I went to see Dr. Barnthouse on April 20, 2015, for an initial consultation. My husband and I traveled to Kansas City from Omaha because I wasn't able to find a surgeon here with extensive experience doing LBLs on post-bariatric patients. I was seriously considering Dr. Guiterrez in Tijuana, MX until my husband put his food down and said "Mexico is off the table!"

Dr. Barnthouse spent 90 minutes going over every aspect of the procedure. Although I have other areas of my body that need work, the abdominal area (front & back) is the worst. I carried all my excess weight right around my middle so you can imagine what it looks like. I hate the muffin top I get in exercise clothes or low-rise pants and feel embarrassed that my excess skin hangs out the leg holes of my undies and any swimsuit I try on. (Before pics pending). I'm currently 5'3" and 142 lbs. I asked him if I needed to lose more weight to get a better result and he said, "No".

The doctor confirmed that I've got decent ab muscles underneath all this skin and that I have "no fat" left on my arms or legs. I've worked really hard the last year on exercise. He said that I've brought my skin as far as I can on my own - now it's his job to do the rest :-)

Because we're 3 hours away from home I'm choosing to stay at the hospital for two nights instead of one night. We may actually spend a third night in KC at the hotel before making the journey home. I'm expecting it to be a pretty uncomfortable trip. The extra hospital night adds another $750 to the cost of the hospital. The expenses break down as follows: $11,500 surgeon fee; $1885 anesthesia fee; $4850 hospital fee. Dr. Barnthouse's surgical fee was right in line with other doctors in Omaha, NE. However, the other surgeons told me it would be an outpatient procedure and take 4-6 hours. Dr. Barnthouse insists on in-patient and says it will take 7-8 hours. That alone inspired more trust in him although it adds considerable cost to the procedure. But at my age, I need the reassurance of being in-patient...and my husband definitely needs the added reassurance! I also like that fact that he practiced for 15 years with Dr. Lockwood, who pioneered the LBL procedure. So my procedure is set for July 8th. We'll travel down on July 7th and go to his office for a final meeting and "before" pics.

I've listed all the positives but must note a couple negatives: 1) Paying $40 for him to rubber-stamp my FMLA paperwork. I literally filled out every single line for him on the form! All he had to do was sign it. He charges $40 for completion of any type of disability or FML paperwork. I could understand it if he had to DO anything - but the office literally rubber-stamped his signature on my form and mailed it back. And promptly cashed my check. Not cool! 2) Emails don't get answered promptly. Questions posed via phone seem to get much faster responses.
