I just turned 40 and figured it was time I deserved a little bit of a break from the pain in my neck, shoulders, and back. I've always been heavy chested. I, like many others on this site, have been dealing with the awkward discomfort of larger than usual breast for as long as I can remember; I'm pretty sure I was the only child in my second grade class that word an actual bra, not a training bra. Being stared at, made fun of, or ogled by the likes of various characters in different stages of my life is something I've become accustomed to.
After having my son, my breast peaked (pun intended) at a 38 JJ. With conscience dieting and exercise I was able to shed a bulk of the baby weight but my lady lumps plateaued at 36 I. This makes bra selection less than pleasant; limited and pricey. And it makes me look so much bigger than I actually am. I recently learned that my insurance covers breast reduction surgery so I thought, 'why not?'
I am currently waiting for my first of two initial consultations with different doctors (I think a second opinion is useful and important). They are a day apart and will be the first week of October 2015. I am not sure what to expect or even the right questions to ask but I have started a list of things to inquire about based on the posts from other ladies on this board. My hope is that I can be reduced to a size comfortable enough for me to increase my current activity level and find bras (or blouses) that don't require an entire bolt of fabric to cover my girls. Sorry for the lengthy rant, but that's the story of my twin city girls.

Finally some pics

I am posting some pics. I am still a couple of weeks away from my initial consultation(s). I have two, with two different doctors- one on the 6th of October and one on the 7th of October. I will hopefully feel comfortable enough with one of them to move forward with the BR. The pain is getting to be too much and way too frequent. I look forward to getting back into the gym the way I used to, just regaining the ability to do a sit-up without the feeling of suffocation will be wonderful!

UPDATED FROM RackPack

Second initial consultation

RackPack
Today was my initial consultation with the second doctor; my first was yesterday. Both doctors were very professional and comforting. I had a fear (however irrational it may sound) that he would tell me I was not a good candidate. I was very relieved when he said that I was not only a good candidate but one that he would consider 'ideal'. Both doctors told me that my breast are very dense so I have more tissue than fat, I guess that is a good thing but it does make them heavier. Something that both doctors said would be helpful in meeting the minimum requirements for insurance coverage. Though both doctors also said that it would not be an issue anyway due to the size of my breast.

I am/was torn as to which doctor to go with because I felt equally comfortable and confident with each of them during the consultations. So for me, I think it will come down to who has the earliest available surgery date. Fingers crossed. I was also told that Federal Blue Cross Blue Shield does not cover up front, rather they look at the results and determine if the minimum requirements were met....has anyone else experienced this?

I have federal bcbs also. Had my surgery on oct. 5. Hoping they will cover it.

Good luck! Do you know if this is typical for their claims?
October 9, 2015
I don't know. My PS said it would be hard because they don't give you any requirements. I wonder how long before I hear something...I'll keep you posted if I hear anything. How are you feeling and healing?
October 9, 2015
Thanks! I really appreciate that:) On the BCBS website it has a listing of items/symptoms and minimum requirements. I think the absolute minimum was 500cc....or something very close to that. Then it varies by height/weight. Also, it lists rashes, shoulder indentation, size must be larger than a C cup, back/neck pain....I forget the rest. My surgery is scheduled for the 27th of this month. I'm really nervous, but super excited and so ready! How is postop going for you?
October 9, 2015
I had a little over 400 cc removed from each breast. My PS said because of my height (5'2) and weight (145 lbs), that would be what he would recommend and that he could use the schlar (?) scale for the appeal, if needed. I was a dd, but still so much swelling, I'm not sure what I am now. Healing pretty good....just sore. I'm not used to not being able to move around like I want, and keeping my arms down. I hope we can stay in touch about our claims. Good luck with your surgery! Hope all goes great!

Thank you! Yes the scale was mentioned in cases for women under 5'5....I think that the cut off. But the site also stated that an appeal could be made using documentation for the other items. I will look for it and message it to you. I think you should be ok to meet the requirements. 400cc likely made a very significant difference for you, which is awesome! I'm very happy you found relief! Hopefully, I will be in the same boat very soon:) I am pretty sure I will have to meet the 500cc requirement because I am almost 5'9 and currently squish into an I cup. I should probably be wearing a J still, but I refuse to spend more money on another ridiculously large bra. LOL! I'll keep you posted with my process and I'll send you that site/scale when I get it:)

Oh, and my PS said he wouldn't feel comfortable taking me to anything smaller than a small D cup.
October 15, 2015
How are you feeling? Hope all is well!
October 15, 2015
hey guys
I had my surgery 10/6 8 days ago. I have BCBS Federal insurance. MY PS pre authorized my treatment even though it is not required. They told me when I called there is no minimum requirement it is whatever the doctor felt was medically necessary. We chose to pre auth and get it in writing. That did mean that we had to submit a certain amount to be removed. We submitted for 400 grams. I was approved the first time out within about 2 weeks. That does mean though that she has to remove 400 from each breast. As it turns out she removed 480 from the Right and 508 from the left. My previous post says different numbers as I wasn't paying attention when I typed them. Hope this helps. Take a look at my post. There are before and after pics there. I want to help anyone I can through this. I bought my first bra today; soft cup molded, but no underwire as I go back to work next week. It is a 36 DD....I think. It is a M from Playtex sports bra and pretty comfy and the sizes range so that is why I am guessing on size. My DD bras fit nicely over the breast and doesn't look like the push up it was before surgery. I am thinking I will be a 34 D to very full C

Thank you very much for the information! I saw your results, they are wonderful! You look great!
I am still waiting for my insurance to get back with the PS (they talked on Friday 10/9). When I sent in the initial request, they replied the very next morning and had already contacted my PS so I felt confident about the process. I think my PS submitted a request for 500cc to be removed from each side. I am a little nervous about it but at both consultations the PS told me that I would be ok to remove 700+ and still be roughly a D. I am currently wearing a 36 I. But I was told that I would probably be more comfortable in a 36 J, but that digs too much into my armpits (I have a J cup from when I was pregnant). They also said that I have a lot of dense tissue as opposed to fatty tissue so that would weigh more and work in my favor when trying to meet insurance requirements. I am really looking forward to easy breathing!

Went back to PS today. He re-taped me. Still tender/sore, but doing well. How are you feeling? I am going shopping for a bra tomorrow...wish me luck!

Good luck!!! I'm curious what your final size will be! Glad you are healing well :) I am getting anxious the closet my date gets, hopefully insurance will come through soon!
