Liposuction - Abdomen, Flanks to Correct Mommy Belly on JULY 22, 2010 - Charlotte

After visiting this site many times to read...

After visiting this site many times to read everyone else's experiences, I have decided to document my own. My procedure is scheduled for 7/22/10. I have found a wonderful DR here whom I trust completely. I had originally gone in to request a tummy tuck, but the DR suggested I would only need some lipo in a few areas.

I am 5'7" and about 155-160lbs. I am very athletic build. Most would not say I needed to lose any weight... but the "mommy belly" is really affecting my self esteem as well as my ability to fit in the correct size pants.

I am very excited despite reading some scary posts. I feel like I am in good hands and I am so anxious for the procedure! Pictures to come!

Question- Like a bonehead I scheduled my hair...

Question- Like a bonehead I scheduled my hair appointment for the day after surgery. Will I feel ok enough to go sit in a chair and have my hair highlighted the day after surgery? Anyone with experience please help.

Day 1 (Day of surgery) was not as bad as I had...

Day 1 (Day of surgery) was not as bad as I had thought it would be. I had general anesthesia and so I think I still had a bit in my system. I was actually in a good mood, walking around the house a bit, and even helped with light dinner clean up. I was already swollen - and my female area was painfully swollen. But overall I was pleased that the pain was much less than I was expeting.

Day 2 Pain a little more severe - although not bad enough to take any pain meds. Pain meds = major constipation for me. And there is nothing worse than that... so I decided to avoid pain meds. I still felt good enough to take my kid to a museum for a few hours! As long as no one bumped into me and I did not have to sit down I was ok.

Day 3 Still very swollen. Decided not to take sleep meds at all - but I am actually sleeping better now. Had my first BM and it was not bad - diet contained TONS of fruit over the last few days so that helped a lot. Went to my son's birthday party with tons of family that had no idea I had surgery (i didnt want to publicize) and I pulled it off! No one suspected I was in pain! Ha Ha.

Day 5 Every day is getting better. Still black and blue. ESPECIALLY legs and woman area. Pain is now only on contact. Still very swollen - but figure is already improved. Measurements and weight still slightly up. I walked 1.5 miles on treadmill SLOW (3.5mi/hr) in the gym (with AC) and it was not bad.

Day 11 : Very swollen in lower back right above...

Day 11 : Very swollen in lower back right above bottom crack. Stomach is a little sore - but nothing compared to flanks. Still sore to touch, sit, lay. Bruising is fading. Keeps dropping lower on my legs. Down below my knees now. Weight is right at pre-op. Diet is excellent although my movement is limited. Walked/light jog on treadmill for 30min now but I was sore. Lots of painful jiggling in flanks. I can feel nerves coming back to life (painful ones). Shape look good though... Not as small as I would like but it is still early. Swelling still severe. Thinking of trading CG for spanks of fexees. Garment is cumbersome and hot in this summer heat. To be continued...

2 week post op: Today is 2 weeks since surgery....

2 week post op: Today is 2 weeks since surgery. Honestly no change in size or shape or weight since this time last week. Nothing to report. Still sore/swollen in lower back, flanks, belly, thighs... basically all treated areas. Bruising almost gone. I would say 80% gone. Pain still there... painful to touch/sit (pain = 3 out of 10). Thought I would be more healed than this.

3 week post op: Today is 3 weeks since surgery....

3 week post op: Today is 3 weeks since surgery. Still no change in size or shape or weight since week 1. Still sore/swollen in all treated areas, especially lower back, flanks... Bruising almost all the way gone (99%). Not noticeable. Pain still there... painful to touch(pain = 3 out of 10). I am veru frustrated that at 3wks out I still look the same as 1wk out. No little improvements... nothing. Just a lot of swelling. Hope this is normal!

6 week update: I am still somewhat swollen. Up...

6 week update: I am still somewhat swollen. Up about 3-4lbs from pre-op weight. Measurements today show a 1 inch decrease in waist. Same in lower abs, bra area, and thigh. Waiting to see improvement here. I saw the Surgeon today. He said I am actually looking ok. He said it is normal to still be up a few pounds of swelling at 6weeks. He was optimistic that I will be very happy after the full 6 months. I sure hope he is right. Otherwise we will be talking about a 6month revision! I will post pics soon of the 6 week status.

As of 2 months PO - my body is still in pain. I...

As of 2 months PO - my body is still in pain. I cannot tell if I have swelling or fat in treated areas. Thighs, bra fat is unchanged. Flanks have big improvement. Abs look the same. I like the small change in my figure... but not worth the money. I have been waiting to post after pics until the swelling was down... now I know this is it. So I will post some pics soon. Weight +7lbs from pre-op. Eating and exercise the same. Must have been more traumatic operation than I intially thought. Would not do it again if I have the chance.

Thanks for posting your results. I almost considered this doc but not now. I expect excellent results for my excellent dollars. I had lipo before but didn't see any results.

I am going back to talk to him about it. I will let you know if he stands by his work and offers to fix it. I am not big on the idea of going back under the knife... but I am also not big on the idea of having wasted $6K for nothing. Stay tuned... I will let you know if he offers to fix the results.

It's been a while--how are you doing? Is the swelling going down? Are you pleased with your new shape? Do you still think it was not really worth it?

Well, it has been almost 3 months and I steel feel swollen. But I cannot tell if it is fat or swelling still. I have a lot of pain on my hips when I work out and to the touch. My weight is still up from surgery (with eating the same and working out consistantly). I love the overall shape my waist has... but I still say for the price I paid (financially and health wise) it was not worth it. Seems before surgery I was not as healthy as I could have been. Sure I could run 3 miles and lifted weights and was at a healthy weight... but I had two young kids, poor sleep thanks to kids, some hormone issues, a borderline thyroid issues, etc. These have all been exaserbated from surgery. Maybe it was the anesthesia... or the lipo process and how rough it is. I don't know. But if I could turn back the clock I would. But I cannot... so I will deal with the 5 extra pounds... and work on getting my health back. Since I cant change the decision I made - I will enjoy the small change in my fingure. :) I know many women that LOVE their results and do fine... and now I know rhere are many women who do not. So just be warned.

Thank you for you postings. It has helped me make the decision not to get Lipo.
I'm sorry about your complications. How are things now?

Hi. I just had the tickle lipo procedure a week ago .I'm 5'4 and weighed 128. Had fat removal in abs, outer thighs, hips and arms. I know it's only been one week but I have worn this exptremely tight compression garment non stop and I see no change at all. NOTHING. After having 2 liters removed all this is left is sever bruising on my outer thighs. My belly is still protruding. What did your doctor say at your more recent visit?

It is way to early to see results... be patient I promise you will see results more like 1month. I have some results... but overall this procedure was very rough on me... so I am not the person to ask. My weight ballooned right after surgery... it has been 2 months now and it has not gone back down! I think you will see results between 4-6wks. It will come!

I am confident in the skill of my surgeon... I know many people that have gone to him with amazing results... so the limited inscision spots could mean that he wanted to to have less scars and also had a really long cannula (sp?) which could also mean more tissue damage. Can u imagine hitting all the way up over belly button when the cannula was inserted in pubic region? That is one long fat sucker! But not long enough to get bra fat. I don't know what to think. I think I love my surgeon- but what if he is just telling me what I want to hear? Time will tell. My next appointment is 9/1/10 (a week from tomorrow) which will be 6wks. He will get to see how huge I am (7lbs up from pre-op). So we will see what he has to say. Maybe by some miracle I will start to lose swelling soon and actually look good in a week. Hey - its gotta happen someday, right? I can feel HUGE swelling spots under abs, at flanks, etc. So I know that this is not leftover fat. I will ask him about the amount of actual FAT removed. Good point. Thanks!

HAHA, well I'm glad you had a good time! Re: Incisions, so I have 12 incisions, 2 on my upper thigh (really, for the abs); 2 pubic area; 2 just above pubic area 2 inside my belly button; 2 on each butt cheek and 2 on my sides, about 2 inches from where my bra stops. That said, I don't recall having bra fat before (I'm mean for sure underarm fat, but thats really just from having big boobs)- so I don't think this was removed from me, nor promised to me. Although, it would seem to me if there was anything there it was covered by the back sets. It is odd, because when I look at our before and after pictures, it is clear that I had wayyyy more fat than you but you had 4 liters removed and I had 3. That brings up technical questions you may want to ask about- I've been told that the liters removed can be stated one of two ways - a= the net fat removed only (so 4 liters= 4 liters of fat) or b= the net fat removed PLUS the liquid that was injected. In the later case, maybe you had 4 liters of fluid removed but of that, only 2 was actually net fat. The relevance of that information is that if in fact you had 4 liters of pure fat removed (scenario a), you may have been reaching the upper limit of fat that can be removed (which is 5) safely- and that might explain it. Also, you know, the drastically different # of incisions may explain the differences in our healing processes- if we are otherwise the same height, weight areas treated etc. When is your next post op visit?

One question though... my surgeon was supposed to go all the way to my bra fat. It was on the paper I signed (it actually lists bra fat) and I know he did not. I had no pain, swelling, bruising, or improvement there (see before pic of back... there is a little fat under bra). Anyway... I only 4 inscicions total (butt crack, under each but cheek and then in pubic region) No inscicions North of pubic. So how could he have possibly got bra fat. Anyway, what do I do? I signed something saying he would get it... and I don't think he did. I would hate to go back into surgery too - it was a rough recovery so far (and still not over).

Thanks for your positive thoughts. I went running on Sunday night for the first time. I think that may be a big part of it. It had been over 3 weeks since I had really worked out. I will attempt to really get some cardio and weights in this week! Good suggestion. I jsut cannot wait to have that excited feeling you have. For some reason I really swelled up last night and today. I know it is my period and such... but I am 4lbs UP from pre-op weight. I am jsut laughing at this point. Like am I the only woman in the world to actually go up in weight and size after paying all that $ for surgery. Ha ha. And I cannot complain about it to my husband since he agreed to the procedure and it was a lot of money to us. I want to seem grateful and happy to him. So you get to hear my venting. LOL! I called the DR yeaterday and they pretty much said (very nicely) that I will be swollen for up to 6wks then START to see improvements. They were very aggressive in fat removal. Nice. I still wish I could see it on me. I will take your advice... log major cardio this week (not sure I can do 70miles while still taking care of my 2 kids - but I think I could jog about 10-12 miles this week). We will see how it goes. Thank you so much for listening and being so positive. :)

Hi, Just wanted to say happy birthday! Hope you made some progress this week! Nothing much to report here- my monthly friend came to visit so it was a bit of a set back in terms of the swelling. I'm still not wearing preop clothes. Anyways hope you have a great day tomorrow!

Thank you! I am offically 32yrs old! :) Well - I will admit that I partyed pretty hard this weekend and THAT set me back big time with swelling/weight gain. I had whatever I wanted to eat and drink all day (and night) Saturday. And Since I was already up 5lbs from pre-op weight... now I am up a total of 8lbs from surgery - which is like 16lbs up from where I should be! OMG! But I am being patient. There is so much trauma in the body from that surgery. It is such a rough procedure. So I know it will be such a long recovery time. I am being patient. But wow... Also- I feel like my whole body is swollen. So I think the birthday party was a little too much on me overall. But I am going to stop watching the scale, taking measurements, etc. I am ready to just be happy and get better. :)

Nope - in fact I have swollen back up to where I was pre-lymphatic massage. It is so depressing. As of this point the surgery was not worth the money. But maybe in 6months I will see results finally. I am 1 pound more than pre-op weight. Sad but true. I feel like I am not making any improvement week after week. But I can feel the large lumps of swelling under my skin in belly and flanks... so I know one day the swelling will go and I will see improvement. It is just not happening AT ALL now. I will not be improved by my bday (this saturday) which will be 1month post op. That is sad. Oh well... we are all different. I am just dying to post "after pics" like yous (which are awesome by the way). I am so jealous... and mad. Like a cruel trick... I will be stuck with this gut forever.

Ok, don't start thinking negatively- you had more than 4 liters removed- that is GOING to show up. If it makes you feel any better my post op was Friday and she felt like I was actually ahead of schedule even with my swelling(I'm 1.2 less than preop weight, but still up about 4-5 lbs if you figure they removed 6 lbs of fat). I don't know if this had anything to do with it but I did INSANE amounts of cardio last week- logged 70 miles- which I felt like I had to do to compensate for not running. As I write this, it occurs to me that maybe my swelling didn't go down- maybe I just lost weight :-) Keep the faith, there is still time to be a hot mama for your birthday!

OH, one more thing: I'm not down ANY inches on my waist at all. My happiness comes from the flank progress.

How are you doing- are you still "deflating"? I'm still up, but have lost about -.2-.5 lbs a day for the past week or so- at 135 today! I posted my 3 week post op pics and went clothes shopping yesterday (well, really only for tops but they fit better now- must say I'm liking the progress!

Did anyone undergo lipo and tell their kids about it? My son is 5yrs old (daughter is 2 but too young to know anything is up). Did you just say you felt sick? Or tired? Or did you show him/her your wound and say you had surgery?

Hi, I hay an 8 year-old I did tell her about it. If she had been 5 like ur oldest I don't think I would of said anything, only because I would not want other ppl to know about. You know how kids are...you could b talking to someone and out of no where they come up with the darnest comments...lol I decided to tell my lil one because I think she's old enough to not b airing my laundry...if u know what I mean ; ) Not many ppl know about my procedure(just a couple of friend who helped and my hubby ofcurse!), I especially DO NOT want my in-laws to know...i don't want to hear them say how we should b saving our money for retirement..etc Anyway, I'm happy i did it was worth every penny! BTW, i'm sure you probably decided to cancel ur hair appt. Would love to c ur after pics. Take care and enjoy ur new belly : )

Thanks, this is great advice. I am not telling my in-laws either. I don't want a lot of people judging our decision to spend the money. But I want this more than I want new floors, countertops, or even a new car. So it is very important to me. I will post pics shortly after procedure... 20days and counting...

You sound similar to me. I had liposuction a month ago in NC and was about 5' 8" and 145 lbs at the time of the procedure. I run multiple miles a week and many people would say I looked like I did not need the procedure. However, after exercising for a few years regularly and maintaining a healthy diet I still could not get rid of unattractive belly fat. Needless to say, its been a month and things are healing as they should though I am not supposed to see full results for at least another month now. I definitely think it was worth it. I personally was able to do a little walking around the day after... I actually went to the grocery store for a little while. However, I do have a friend that was not feeling well for about 3 or 4 days after the procedure; she was unable to get up and move on her own. It could be because her surgeon told her to do all the things mine told me not to do and told her not to do the things mine recommended. Just to play it safe, I'd reschedule the hair appointment for the next week. Also, the drainage can be tough to deal with in public and keeping it bandaged well enough to go out makes you look like you've gained weight. I kept my procedure on the down low and didn't want to be out in public too long just in case I ran into people. Either way, good luck! I'm excited for you. :o)
