After visiting this site many times to read everyone else's experiences, I have decided to document my own. My procedure is scheduled for 7/22/10. I have found a wonderful DR here whom I trust completely. I had originally gone in to request a tummy tuck, but the DR suggested I would only need some lipo in a few areas.

I am 5'7" and about 155-160lbs. I am very athletic build. Most would not say I needed to lose any weight... but the "mommy belly" is really affecting my self esteem as well as my ability to fit in the correct size pants.

I am very excited despite reading some scary posts. I feel like I am in good hands and I am so anxious for the procedure! Pictures to come!

Question- Like a bonehead I scheduled my hair appointment for the day after surgery. Will I feel ok enough to go sit in a chair and have my hair highlighted the day after surgery? Anyone with experience please help.

Day 1 (Day of surgery) was not as bad as I had thought it would be. I had general anesthesia and so I think I still had a bit in my system. I was actually in a good mood, walking around the house a bit, and even helped with light dinner clean up. I was already swollen - and my female area was painfully swollen. But overall I was pleased that the pain was much less than I was expeting.

Day 2 Pain a little more severe - although not bad enough to take any pain meds. Pain meds = major constipation for me. And there is nothing worse than that... so I decided to avoid pain meds. I still felt good enough to take my kid to a museum for a few hours! As long as no one bumped into me and I did not have to sit down I was ok.

Day 3 Still very swollen. Decided not to take sleep meds at all - but I am actually sleeping better now. Had my first BM and it was not bad - diet contained TONS of fruit over the last few days so that helped a lot. Went to my son's birthday party with tons of family that had no idea I had surgery (i didnt want to publicize) and I pulled it off! No one suspected I was in pain! Ha Ha.

Day 5 Every day is getting better. Still black and blue. ESPECIALLY legs and woman area. Pain is now only on contact. Still very swollen - but figure is already improved. Measurements and weight still slightly up. I walked 1.5 miles on treadmill SLOW (3.5mi/hr) in the gym (with AC) and it was not bad.

Updated on Aug 2, 2010:
Day 11 : Very swollen in lower back right above bottom crack. Stomach is a little sore - but nothing compared to flanks. Still sore to touch, sit, lay. Bruising is fading. Keeps dropping lower on my legs. Down below my knees now. Weight is right at pre-op. Diet is excellent although my movement is limited. Walked/light jog on treadmill for 30min now but I was sore. Lots of painful jiggling in flanks. I can feel nerves coming back to life (painful ones). Shape look good though... Not as small as I would like but it is still early. Swelling still severe. Thinking of trading CG for spanks of fexees. Garment is cumbersome and hot in this summer heat. To be continued...

Updated on Aug 5, 2010:
2 week post op: Today is 2 weeks since surgery. Honestly no change in size or shape or weight since this time last week. Nothing to report. Still sore/swollen in lower back, flanks, belly, thighs... basically all treated areas. Bruising almost gone. I would say 80% gone. Pain still there... painful to touch/sit (pain = 3 out of 10). Thought I would be more healed than this.

Updated on Aug 12, 2010:
3 week post op: Today is 3 weeks since surgery. Still no change in size or shape or weight since week 1. Still sore/swollen in all treated areas, especially lower back, flanks... Bruising almost all the way gone (99%). Not noticeable. Pain still there... painful to touch(pain = 3 out of 10). I am veru frustrated that at 3wks out I still look the same as 1wk out. No little improvements... nothing. Just a lot of swelling. Hope this is normal!

Updated on Sep 1, 2010:
6 week update: I am still somewhat swollen. Up about 3-4lbs from pre-op weight. Measurements today show a 1 inch decrease in waist. Same in lower abs, bra area, and thigh. Waiting to see improvement here. I saw the Surgeon today. He said I am actually looking ok. He said it is normal to still be up a few pounds of swelling at 6weeks. He was optimistic that I will be very happy after the full 6 months. I sure hope he is right. Otherwise we will be talking about a 6month revision! I will post pics soon of the 6 week status.

Updated on Sep 23, 2010:
As of 2 months PO - my body is still in pain. I cannot tell if I have swelling or fat in treated areas. Thighs, bra fat is unchanged. Flanks have big improvement. Abs look the same. I like the small change in my figure... but not worth the money. I have been waiting to post after pics until the swelling was down... now I know this is it. So I will post some pics soon. Weight +7lbs from pre-op. Eating and exercise the same. Must have been more traumatic operation than I intially thought. Would not do it again if I have the chance.

How are you doing? I had my tt with lipo on thighs, flanks. I am draining quite a bit. Doctor said that's normal. Are you draining at all?
acgray 27 Jun 2010
You sound similar to me. I had liposuction a month ago in NC and was about 5' 8" and 145 lbs at the time of the procedure. I run multiple miles a week and many people would say I looked like I did not need the procedure. However, after exercising for a few years regularly and maintaining a healthy diet I still could not get rid of unattractive belly fat. Needless to say, its been a month and things are healing as they should though I am not supposed to see full results for at least another month now. I definitely think it was worth it. I personally was able to do a little walking around the day after... I actually went to the grocery store for a little while. However, I do have a friend that was not feeling well for about 3 or 4 days after the procedure; she was unable to get up and move on her own. It could be because her surgeon told her to do all the things mine told me not to do and told her not to do the things mine recommended. Just to play it safe, I'd reschedule the hair appointment for the next week. Also, the drainage can be tough to deal with in public and keeping it bandaged well enough to go out makes you look like you've gained weight. I kept my procedure on the down low and didn't want to be out in public too long just in case I ran into people. Either way, good luck! I'm excited for you. :o)

Thanks! I am excited as well! I think our current level of fitness will allow more activity after the procedure. I have had two c-sections and was up taking walks around the block as soon as I got home form the hospital. I think movement will help. Can I ask a few questions about your recovery? We sound similar... how long did you wear your garmet? My DR said it is not madatory.. but he thinks I will want it for 2 weeks. In this NC heat I am wondering... Also - did you lose any weight? Pants size? Just curious. Have you started running again?
acgray 28 Jun 2010
I was able to take my first jog about 1 & 1/2 weeks after the surgery. I ran about half the distance I usually do and almost at my usual speed. My doctor recommended any exercise short of running up until two weeks; since I didn't wait 2 weeks I didn't run as much though I felt like I could go further. I just hit the 4 week mark and I'm not running every day but I am doing 5 miles every other day. I enjoy my runs more now! As far as the compression garment goes, it really isn't that bad - you get used to it and it really does help speed up the recovery. I have two garments so I'm able to wash one and still wear the other. I was told to wear mine 24/7 the first 4 weeks; I only have to wear it at nights from now until 8 weeks then I do not need it. I have chosen to keep wearing it all hours though just to help speed up the recovery a little; my doctor told me that would help and since I'm used to it I do not mind. No one can tell I wear the garment even when wearing tighter clothing. Before the surgery I would wear a size 6/8; I'm a student so at the time of the surgery I had just gone through finals (horrible sleeping, eating and exercising habits) and was up in weight about 5 lbs. and my 6's were tighter than normal. He toke out approximately 5 lbs. of fat from my abdomen and flanks and said that I should drop about 2 sizes. I estimate I'll be about a 4/6. I have gone back down a few lbs and my clothes are feeling a little more loose. I went in for a check up last week and was told that everything looks great and is as expected; great news is that my doctor said I still have a lot of change coming! :o)

Thanks for the information. I cannot wait!

Hi, I think I'm in the same boat as you guys- I'm 5'6, 135 lbs and many of my friends don't understand why I'm having this done (7/27 is my date). I run every day, but frequently people ask me if I have "thought about working out" to get rid of my belly- its horrible. I'm wondering if either of you were awake for the procedure and how long you were scheduled for? Mine is booked for 5 hours with general...this is not what I was expecting after having read other peoples posts! Elaine
acgray 14 Jul 2010
I was awake for the entire procedure and even held conversations. I was under local anesthesia and from start to finish the procedure took about 3 hours... the physician originally thought it was not going to take that long but later said I hid the adipose tissue well and he just wanted to do the best job possible. I'm about 7 weeks post op and think it was definitely worth it (though I've totally missed out on the beach and the pool this summer). Still have a ways to go as far as changing is concerned though.
Lynn1978 28 Jul 2010
Hey Elaine- How did surgery go? I had mine on the 22nd. How are u feeling? I was under general for about an hour and a half although they told my husband it was a 3hr procedure. I think they allot more time in case they need it so no one will worry. I am 6days post op and still very bruised and swollen. My garmet looks blocky and cumbersome under my clothes so it is hard to get a good feeling of what my shape may look like. How are you?
8806anon 29 Jul 2010
Hi, how are you??? Anesthesia was the worst of it, I woke up with a hangover feeling, vomiting, headache. I have managed to skip the narcotics but my swelling makes me the size of a house and I can't really get comfortable. My biggest clothes don't fit and I wouldn't dare force myself into jeans. I know I'm going to be psyched with the results and that is good news but I feel like that could be months away. I had 3.2 liters removed- upper & lower abs, flanks and back. I just want to be a normal person with a normal appetite again :-) Today was my first shower day and it took everything out of me. I guess I was not prepared for just HOW down I have turned out to be. Pain really isn't an issue its just an overall feeling of...yuck. I hope you are doing well...it is nice to compare notes to someone who is going through this at the same time - albeit a few days ahead of me :-)
Lynn1978 29 Jul 2010
I (luckily) had no negative reaction to the anesthesia. So I think a lot of what you are going through is due to your poor reaction. I am still very swollen on Day 7 (Day 6 if you dont count day of surgery). I am huge and cannot fit into my clothes either. I had to buy some cotton capri's and dresses from Old Navy to come back to work. Anyway, I had about 4liters removed so we are very similar. I saw the DR today for a 1wk check-up. He said that my severe swelling is normal (and after reading your note I believe him). He said that I will be too small for my jeans within 4-6wks! So that made me feel better. I got a good feel for my shape yesterday when I decided to play around and remove my garment and put a pair of spanks on. Even though I am so large and swollen the shape of my body was very improved. That was enough to put me in a good mood. How is your bruising? Mine is starting to fade - but still very noticeable. My flanks still hurt SO BAD! But, like you, I decided on no narcotics. :)
8806anon 30 Jul 2010
Ok, I'm doing much better today but I think I still have about 8lbs of swelling (I weighed 137 day of, they removed 3.2 liters which is about 6 lbs and I'm 140 today. Its all in my butt and hips, so its interesting to be a pear for a week. I can't imagine jeans would feel too good- even a size 6 but I might try this weekend. My bruising is not too bad- I have taken the arnica & bromelain religously though. Let me ask, did you have any of the passing out business with your first shower? I really felt woozy after so I'm sort of scared about taking one today b/c no one is here with me...
Lynn1978 31 Jul 2010
Well if it makes you feel any better I am still so swollen and up about 1-2lbs from surgery and on day 9. I don't see how I can possibly see results as early as 3 wks when I have not seen a change in 9 days! Oh well. About the shower... my DR told me to lay down on the bed and remove the garment and stay laying down for 30min before getting up. It worked great. Although now I don't have to do it at all.

I went out and bought one of those flexees body briefers today to wear instead of the compression garmet. I highly recommend it! It is less bulky than the one the doctor gave me and also, I feel like it compresses more of me (currently I'm swolen in places I did not know could SWELL). I agree with you, there is no way I'm going to be seeing results at 3 weeks. Gosh, I'm still trying to scrub the marker off myself!

Did anyone undergo lipo and tell their kids about it? My son is 5yrs old (daughter is 2 but too young to know anything is up). Did you just say you felt sick? Or tired? Or did you show him/her your wound and say you had surgery?
1625anon 1 Jul 2010
Hi, I hay an 8 year-old I did tell her about it. If she had been 5 like ur oldest I don't think I would of said anything, only because I would not want other ppl to know about. You know how kids are...you could b talking to someone and out of no where they come up with the darnest comments...lol I decided to tell my lil one because I think she's old enough to not b airing my laundry...if u know what I mean ; ) Not many ppl know about my procedure(just a couple of friend who helped and my hubby ofcurse!), I especially DO NOT want my in-laws to know...i don't want to hear them say how we should b saving our money for retirement..etc Anyway, I'm happy i did it was worth every penny! BTW, i'm sure you probably decided to cancel ur hair appt. Would love to c ur after pics. Take care and enjoy ur new belly : )
Lynn1978 2 Jul 2010
Thanks, this is great advice. I am not telling my in-laws either. I don't want a lot of people judging our decision to spend the money. But I want this more than I want new floors, countertops, or even a new car. So it is very important to me. I will post pics shortly after procedure... 20days and counting...
1625anon 2 Jul 2010
cool!!! can't wait to c them. I'm 15 days post-op, I already posted my after pics, u can click on my profile pic u can c them : ) I'm getting ready for my BA, I had to split my procedures for health reasons. Have a nice weekend : )
Christie30 6 Jul 2010
Good luck! Can't wait to hear about your procedure.
8806anon 15 Aug 2010
How are you doing- are you still "deflating"? I'm still up, but have lost about -.2-.5 lbs a day for the past week or so- at 135 today! I posted my 3 week post op pics and went clothes shopping yesterday (well, really only for tops but they fit better now- must say I'm liking the progress!
Lynn1978 16 Aug 2010
Nope - in fact I have swollen back up to where I was pre-lymphatic massage. It is so depressing. As of this point the surgery was not worth the money. But maybe in 6months I will see results finally. I am 1 pound more than pre-op weight. Sad but true. I feel like I am not making any improvement week after week. But I can feel the large lumps of swelling under my skin in belly and flanks... so I know one day the swelling will go and I will see improvement. It is just not happening AT ALL now. I will not be improved by my bday (this saturday) which will be 1month post op. That is sad. Oh well... we are all different. I am just dying to post "after pics" like yous (which are awesome by the way). I am so jealous... and mad. Like a cruel trick... I will be stuck with this gut forever.
8806anon 16 Aug 2010
Ok, don't start thinking negatively- you had more than 4 liters removed- that is GOING to show up. If it makes you feel any better my post op was Friday and she felt like I was actually ahead of schedule even with my swelling(I'm 1.2 less than preop weight, but still up about 4-5 lbs if you figure they removed 6 lbs of fat). I don't know if this had anything to do with it but I did INSANE amounts of cardio last week- logged 70 miles- which I felt like I had to do to compensate for not running. As I write this, it occurs to me that maybe my swelling didn't go down- maybe I just lost weight :-) Keep the faith, there is still time to be a hot mama for your birthday!
8806anon 16 Aug 2010
OH, one more thing: I'm not down ANY inches on my waist at all. My happiness comes from the flank progress.
Lynn1978 17 Aug 2010
Thanks for your positive thoughts. I went running on Sunday night for the first time. I think that may be a big part of it. It had been over 3 weeks since I had really worked out. I will attempt to really get some cardio and weights in this week! Good suggestion. I jsut cannot wait to have that excited feeling you have. For some reason I really swelled up last night and today. I know it is my period and such... but I am 4lbs UP from pre-op weight. I am jsut laughing at this point. Like am I the only woman in the world to actually go up in weight and size after paying all that $ for surgery. Ha ha. And I cannot complain about it to my husband since he agreed to the procedure and it was a lot of money to us. I want to seem grateful and happy to him. So you get to hear my venting. LOL! I called the DR yeaterday and they pretty much said (very nicely) that I will be swollen for up to 6wks then START to see improvements. They were very aggressive in fat removal. Nice. I still wish I could see it on me. I will take your advice... log major cardio this week (not sure I can do 70miles while still taking care of my 2 kids - but I think I could jog about 10-12 miles this week). We will see how it goes. Thank you so much for listening and being so positive. :)
8806anon 20 Aug 2010
Hi, Just wanted to say happy birthday! Hope you made some progress this week! Nothing much to report here- my monthly friend came to visit so it was a bit of a set back in terms of the swelling. I'm still not wearing preop clothes. Anyways hope you have a great day tomorrow!
