Healed

I haven't updated in a bit, and I'm sorry for anyone who is seeking information about labiaplasty. I'm healed and you can't see any scar (at least from what I've seen...). The scar tissue, which you can feel under the skin, is a little tender but not a lot. It's been amazing. I'm so happy I went through with the surgery. I genuinely forget what it was like when I had uneven labia sometimes, but I remember it was miserable. I'm not saying labiaplasty has fixed all my problems and now everything's great, but my vaginal issues are nonexistent. I recommend going through with the surgery if your labia is causing issues and pain like mine did.

Since sometime during puberty, my left labia has...

Since sometime during puberty, my left labia has been gradually extending beyond my right. It was all right until it got to the point where it was causing pain. While it was causing me discomfort during day-to-day activities, the real issue was the pain it caused me while I was horseback riding. If I was wearing the wrong underwear or the labia was positioned a certain way, it would get rubbed to the point where it was swollen and tender for a few days afterwards; which was horrible because I was riding every day. And if I had a tampon in, it was pure torture as the string would rub the skin off.
When I learned about labiaplasty over a year ago, I was very interested. I'd been researching for a while, and I was finally referred to Dr. Alter by another plastic surgeon near me who took a class from him. I had a consultation with Dr. Alter in New York and had my surgery done out in California, as he wasn't going to be back in NY until June. I should mention that the consultation went really well, and he knew exactly what I wanted and answered any and all questions we had. He was also kind enough to call my mother afterwards, as she was down in Florida at the time and couldn't make it to the consult. ?
Fast-forward to April and my Mother and I flew out to California for the surgery. The first day we were there I had my pre-op. He showed my Mother what he was going to do, as she wasn't at the earlier consultation. It was quick but reassuring; it made my Mother and I feel good about the surgery. We also got to talk to Zena, the office manager, and she was lovely. She gave us a supplement to take after the surgery to reduce bruising, and explained how to prepare. We were able to move the surgery up to 7:30, which was great because I couldn't eat or drink beforehand. When we got there, I was a little apprehensive but was confident in Dr. Alter's ability. My anesthesiologist was lovely and was talking to me throughout the process, which kept me calm. The nurse who was with me was also very sweet.
When I woke up, I was shaking a little, but it was just my body waking up. I went with the nurse to go to the bathroom, and was a little scared when I saw that I was leaking blood onto the ground. Once I got back to the bed, Dr. Alter came over and figured out why I was bleeding and stopped it with pressure. I think he had another surgery right after us, so he told me everything went well, how to stop the bleeding, and then was on his way. My post-op was set for the next day at 12:30. The nurse, Genevieve I think, was wonderful and took care of me and talked to me the whole time I was recuperating. She also wheeled me out to the car.
The pain wasn't horrible, but icing it helped a lot. I just rested for the rest of the day but was able to see the results and was really happy. I should mention that I also had a clitoral hood reduction as well, but it was for more cosmetic reasons and was pretty minor. Going to the bathroom was rough for the first two days because it hurt a little, but it wasn't awful. He told us that I looked good and was healing well at the post-op, and the rest of the day I just rested again. Thursday I rested for most of the day but had the energy to go out for a nice dinner. Friday was the day we were leaving, and I was starting to think I was getting a yeast infection. We had to go over to his office to get a note for school, and after we had told the ladies up front they were able to get us to see him right away, which was great. Dr. Alter prescribed something for the yeast infection and told me, again, that I was healing well. We spent the rest of the morning walking around, which wasn't too uncomfortable! Still, I started to get tired, and we also had to pack, so we headed back to the hotel until we had to leave for LAX.
Now, I'm home, and I can tell you the plane ride was fine. I was having trouble sitting, but by Friday I was fine. It's not nearly as sore as it was, and the swelling has gone down a lot. I've been a little obsessive over the stitches and keeping them clean and moist. I've been worrying about screwing this up since the beginning, but right now I'm concerned my stitches will dissolve too soon.

Sorry, this was really long, so I'm going to bullet point the major points people who are interested in this surgery should know.
-The first day was a little scary, but it got so much better.
-The pain is the worst the first two days, but icing it on and off helps tremendously
-after urinating, I sprayed the area gently with water, patted dry, and then applied Bacitracin, as instructed, but only for the first two days.
-Walking isn't that hard; even the day of the surgery I could walk

I, so far, have found labiaplasty to be worth it 100%. Once I got over the fear of the stitches (I was really scared I was going to bust them open), I was ecstatic. After several years of dealing with the pain and feeling self-conscious, I finally had a "normal", very natural looking vagina. I'm still healing and will definitely update, but I really cannot thank Dr. Alter enough for how much he's helped me.

I really love Dr. Alter and highly recommend him. He did a beautiful job and made me feel calm throughout the process. He has a wonderful personality and my mother and I loved him. He was able to tame the anxious mother while helping me feel confident about the surgery. I was referred to him by a plastic surgeon in my area that we are friendly with. He had taken a class from Dr. Alter and felt that he was the best. I agree, he's very knowledgeable and he tells you how it is. Zena was also lovely and very helpful, particularly for my mother. Dr. Alter is very blunt, but not in an offensive way. He's an expert in his field and will tell you how it is. He is caring, and kind, and has a wonderful sense of humor. He's professional and is amazing at what he does. I highly recommend him.
