Vi Peel Didn't Go Like the Website Said, but Was Worth It!

Worth It
Spent: $150 in Huntington Beach, CA

I have to admit what drew me in was the research I did on the product's website. The before/after photos; even the instructional video; that made this peel look like no pain, lots of gain!

The best price I found in my area was a package deal, $500 for two peels. I just didn't want to spend the money. So what does any discerning, informed consumer do? Go to ebay. My neighbor used to work for a Dermatologist, so I figured if I had an emergency I could call on her. Otherwise, how hard could it be to give yourself a chemical peel?

I timed out my peel so that the worst peeling days (3 & 4 according to the website) would coincide with days I knew I didn't have to leave the house. After all, how bad could it be? The day-by-day photos on the website were VERY misleading. That lady looked like all she did was remove her makeup.

I am a 37 year old woman of Italian descent who has admittedly enjoyed my time in the sun.....

Day 1: The website said after the 1st pass over your face, the peel numbs the skin and that there's no pain after this. Lies. It stung, it was uncomfortable. Not unbearable, but not comfortable. You leave the product on for a minimum of 4 hrs or overnight if you can bear it. I washed it off at the 4 hr. mark. My face was already appeared sunburnt.

Day 2: Skin started feeling very tight and was very dark brown in color. Not exactly fit for public. The website said make-up could be applied on this day. My skin was so brown and dry and crusty my makeup just made my face look purple. At this point every time you talk or make a facial expression you feel it. Like your face is gonna crack and fall off. Which you will wish it did by day 3.

Day 3: Let the peeling begin. Which,by the way, happens nothing like the website says. At this point your damaged top layer of skin is very brown (if you're caucasian) and begins to loosen and peel around your mouth first. That is typically where the most of my sun damage shows up for some reason. You are advised from ever peeling the skin. Your only comfort during this time as you literally have sheets of skin hanging off your face is the cuticle scissor. Otherwise you would go insane with the tickling and the itching as your skin peels/heals at the same time.

Day 4: More of the same, just seems slower than the day before. I think this was the day I absolutely had to do the grocery shopping and I wore a hat and sunglasses and still felt like everyone was staring at me. I looked like a burn victim, as the area around my mouth had fully peeled, with fresh pink skin showing and the rest of my face was dark brown.

Day 5: Still peeling, only now I'm starting to wonder if it will ever be over. I couldn't imagine having to work outside the home during this time. My children were so enthralled with the entire process. Everyday was like a new adventure. Oooo Mom, look at your face now. MOMMMM, you have a big piece hanging off, can I pick it?! NOBODY TOUCH MY FACE! I even had to slap my husband's hand.

Day 6: Light at the end of the tunnel. I have to admit at this point I was "so over it" and all that was left was my cheekbones and a bit of forehead and hairline. My skin was less tender at this point so I spent more time washing to encourage the rest of the skin off. Ta-DAAA! By mid-day I was presentable. Skin was fresh, pink and glowing like a newborn baby!

Day 7: As your PH levels get back normal, you may have a couple of whiteheads pop up, no biggie. Your skin has just been traumatized. Over the next 2 days or so I had a couple of "dry spots" around my mouth especially. I just kept piling on the moisturizer.

Day 8 and beyond....
I have been told I'm so pretty, my hair looks great, even my husband (who was out of town for the worst of the peeling) said "Wow, your skin looks amazing!"

With all that said, I would recommend it. It's not for the faint of heart, and it doesn't go anything like is advertised. But definitely worth it!

You are not a licensed medical professional and therefore the results that you received were unexpected and abnormal. The application of the peel is to cease when the skin reaches a certain level- you did not know what to look for and clearly applied the peel beyond this point. What happened to you is NOT a normal reaction.

My results/progression was exactly as hers and I had it done professionally for $300 by someone who does 8-15 Vi peels per day. Plus I did a ton of research watching a dozen professionals perform this in news/video/interview clips. So, I don't understand what you are talking about that her results were unexpected and abnormal. Also, I was told by Dr.Kalil's office (the creator of the peel) is that the whole amount of product is applied at one time, there is no diluting/prepping % and NO neutralizer/buffing agent needed. It's not the same as a TCA, etc. where types of 'frosting' must be watched, then neutralized. It's applied, you let it dry, go home, apply the pads each night for 2 nights, that's it. I'm not being mean, but you obviously don't know what you are talking about. Are you a professional performing these?

I don't know who you are, but you are definitely full of crap. I too had the Vi peel done to me 7 months ago and what JerseyCarolinaCaliGirl described is EXACTLY what happened to me. It did not go AT ALL nice and simple and pain free like my dermatolgist said it would. I was angry that I was not told the TRUTH about what to expect and at the last minute I had to call in sick for work for the next week because there was no way I could go out in public like that. It was painful and burned, my skin was very tender until day 7 or 8, and it was HELL, but yes, the results were worth it. my skin DID look like a newborn baby afterward and I was very happpy with the results, Just pissed off that I was not told the truth about the process.

You are correct. I'm not a "licensed medical professional". I did, however, follow the detailed written instructions exactly. No where was it written to cease application of the peel. On the contrary, you are directed to apply the entire contents of the peel on your face AND keep it on for a minimum of 4 hours or overnight if you can tolerate it. I can appreciate the value of having the supervision of a professional. I want to make clear that I did EXACTLY as the instruction & video online directed.

HOW AND WHERE DID YOU BUY IT IF YOU ARE NOT A MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL?
Baltimore Christine (4 posts) 15 Nov 2009
I recently had the peel applied by a licensed professional, and although my skin was not as discolored as described here, the entire process has been EXACTLY as described in the above post. (And I have had 2 TCA peels over the last ten years so I have experienced more severe chemical peels, therefore, I am not over dramatizing.) Bottom line- I found the application as the literature promised and not at all unpleasant- except for the smell. But the healing is not as described in the literature so this post is extremely useful when planning for work and subsequent activities. I looked extremely sun burnt the day I had the peel applied and went to work the following day, but the peeling process was MUCH longer and more difficult to hide than described in all literature- I could not go in to work day 3-6 due to extreme flaking and discoloration of skin. Ultimately, I also agree with this post that it is worth it, particularly compared to a deeper peel.

I am no medical professional either. I went to a licensed aesthetician who applied the VI Peel. It is only the beginning of Day 2, but I seriously look like a burn victim! I look like I have splotchy patches of freckle farms across my face, and I still look extremely sunburned. This is going to be difficult to conceal when I go to my parent's house tomorrow for the holidays. I guess I could always go as Rudolph the Red-FACED Reindeer. I am sure hoping this is worth it. Thank God I don't go back in to work until the 30th!

I just had a VI peel December 18th 2009 performed at Dr. Armando Soto's office by Amanda. I had these dark circles on my cheeks I don't know whether they were from heredity or birth control but they had to go. I felt like my face was on fire on day 5 and had no peeling on my face until day 7. Amanda was just a phone call away and gave me all the attention that \i really needed. Don't be alarmed because I look great now on day 10. The burning is gone and my skin hasn't looked this great since I was in my 20's. Yes I am almost 40 and my money was well spent. I have two more peels to go and am very happy that I did it. No matter how bad you want just don't peel it, rub it or disturb it! A piece of fresh aloe from the fridge will make you feel like you are in heaven. I was also sensitive to the moisturizer given so I used a cocoa butter stick until that shiny skin was gone.

Hi 10k! I'm nearing 40 as well. I did my first Vi peel 6-7 weeks ago. I was told I can do another, but my results were minimal. I'm considering additional Vi or trying a low % (safe) TCA. Have you researched the others? Why did the doctor choose this one for you (other than being expensive)? I'm guessing you might be doing this for sun damage...mine was for hormonal acne happening, but I wanted to lessen my little crows feet and thicken the skin under my eyes for better collagen growth. Do you think the skin under and around your eyes looks younger?

I am coming to the end of day two of my peel! (I had it Jan 5th 2010) I have to say I am a little relieved to read this post purely because although I had a highly recognised skin specialist apply the VI Peel, I am experiencing gross dark brown crusty patches, extreme tightness and I look absolutely horrific!I took off my top and caught one of the scabs leaving me with a grossly unsightly bright fleshy pink piece! I am so nervous, I really feel like I wont recover!! I do have medium to dark skin (Mediterranean) so I guess maybe its that type of skin that causes this reaction maybe? I am currently using a mild face wash which I very gently take off with water and gentle face sponges and I am slathering on Elizabeth Arden 8 hour cream. I am tight and sore and cannot wait for this to be over and highly doubt I will do it again!! I will keep you posted.

LisaLisa197...how are you now? I did the VI Peel this past Sunday afternoon by an aesthetician. The application of the peel was totally painless for me. It was applied at 12:30pm and I didn't wash my face until 10pm that night. All was well until I applied the Retin-A towlette...I thought my face was going to burn off! I had to wash it after only about 30 min. I used cortisone cream, but nothing relieved my burning until I washed it and applied the VI moisturizer (not sure if that was ok, but I did it anyway) My face has been fine today, just really tight and red. I washed again tonight and applied the Retin-A towlette and it did not burn near as bad as last night. Tomorrow is day 3...I'm so nervous! I hope all goes well and will keep you posted. Your comments so far are encouraging to me.

kelly, i was told to avoid the retin-A until day 5, way too much for your skin to handle.

Hi everyone! Sorry I haven't posted for a while been preparing for my T.T. Surgery. I am very happy with my V.I. Peel final result and am going to do it again to work a little more on my chin and around my mouth. I did have an increase in acne activity, but I had an extracting facial. It looks much much better. Anymore questions feel free to ask. By the way the retin A and vitamin C were my best friend I did not see the acne until I ended them. For those who don't know two towelettes come with your kit and you can't purchase them separately.

I just had the Vi peel done by an RN this past Wednesday. Today is Saturday and my face is bright red, my skin is coming off in sheets and my chin is cracked and very painful. It burned quite badly for me when it was applied, especially in my chin area. Now if I put anything at all on my chin (lotion or hydrocortisone cream)it results in an intense feeling of needles pricking my skin. Only ice will relieve this pain so I've decided to no put anything on my chin again for now. I pray that this is all over soon. I have also found this process to be far from what was described but I know we are all different. I have always had sensitive skin so maybe this was a bit much for me. Anyone have advice on the cracked and crusty chin? Something petroleum based or is that a no no. It seems all other lotions are super irritating.

How does this peel compare to a light/medium TCA peel? Is it just as strong or considered much lighter? The downtime seems similar to a TCA peel. I'll be having this or a TCA peel done soon. I'm uncertain which one to get.
JerseyCarolinaCaliGirl (8 posts) 8 Mar 2010
I have to be honest, I've had both types of peels and can't say, from my experience that one has been any better/different than the other. I am Italian so I have an olive-y complexion. What I think makes the biggest difference is the follow-up, i.e. getting consecutive peels as directed and wearing sunscreen to keep those dark spots from coming back. Best of luck to you!

So glad I found this post. Did the VI peel on Wed - was not uncomfortable at all during application or for the 4 hours after. The next day, all was ok, just looked like I had been in the sun WAY too long. Started peeling on Fri, but still no real discomfort. Yesterday (Sat) my face felt super tight & on fire. Every time I opened my mouth to eat, drink, or God forbid SMILE, it felt like my face was cracking into a hundred pieces. Today is Sunday (day 5) & is by far the worst of it. "ON FIRE" does not do justice to how my face feels today. I had the VI peel applied by a licensed aesthetician, but she did not prepare me for these side effects. Also, she only told me to apply the VI SPF 30 followed by the VI moisturizer once in the morning & said I could apply Cortizone periodically if I had "mild itching." The VI products do not seem to agree w/ me & even the Cortizone feels like pouring salt into open wounds right now. I paid for 2 of these...not sure if I will do the 2nd one. Will post again if the end results are worth it!

Hi Jen 1974 I was wondering now that it is May 3...was the vi peel worth it? What specific differences did it make? I am debating on whether to do one. I have had the new laser pelleve for skin tightening and the fraxel . Any suggestions?

Good information about the Vi Peel...a dermatologist I went to said it was one of her favorite peels but I was thinking about getting the Vitalize Peel that is on special somewhere for $100 through May and has anyone had this?
bamf (1 post) 26 May 2010
I just wanted to say I'm sooo glad I found this post on Sunday afternoon after having my VI Peel Thursday afternoon... I was in a pretty bad state having been expecting "light & fluffy" peeling for 2-3 days.... I was not given any information related to any of the side effects that I might have and I was certainly not warned that I may not be able to go out in public for 5 days! I'm a 29 year old Caucasian with blonde hair. There was nothing wrong with my face but I was recommended the peel by my doctor for a nice pre-wedding fresh youthful glow... I'm so glad I did this 6 months out from the wedding as a "test" because there is NO WAY I will be doing it ever again... My peel went pretty much how this lady had explained... I should have known something was pretty serious when the doctor applied nail polish remover to my entire face before hand.... WTF? Yes, applying the peel burned and was pretty uncomfortable afterwards... I went home and lay in bed and it hurt for 2.5 hours. I washed it off at the 4 hour mark, applied the first wipe and creams then went to bed. On Friday (the next day) I looked REALLY sunburnt but covered my neck with some bronzer to match my face and went in to work... I lasted half a day... I looked pretty bad. That night it was tight and had started going brown.. like the skin on top was dead. I wasn't sure if I should laugh or cry.... Saturday my face had started to get really tight and the application of the moisturizer and sunscreen provided was like sticking a million needles into my face... but I did it anyways... It was hard to eat because the skin was getting really tight. Only relief was a bottle of wine and DVD's at home in the dark. Sunday was when i started to panic... I looked like I belonged in a burns ICU... my face was almost black in parts and so tight I couldn't open my mouth without feeling like my face was going to crack into a million pieces. It had started to peel around my nose and mouth so those parts were bright pink... I looked like a gummy bear! It was at this point I knew I couldn't go into work the following day - not what I had signed up for "no down time, some tightness, and fluffy peeling" -ummm, no not here sorry... So I rang the doctor to see if I should come in first thing Monday morning to make sure I hadn't been permanently damaged... I was totally freaking out. He informed me this was "normal"... I was not impressed... Cost of the peel tripled having to take a day off work for me. He recommended I get Aquaphor cream since the other cream was burning... So I did... FYI, it's not a cream it's an ointment and I slathered that all over my face which gave some relief... Still i was almost sipping wine through a straw that night to knock myself out so I could get some sleep... Monday afternoon was when my face really started to peel.... I let the ointment dry out and as it did my skin started to peel back with facial movement... I was careful not to peel it off but did trim off the pieces as they came loose. By around 6pm that night almost all my skin had peeled off and I was bright pink.. Still not really fit for public but at least all the black\brown skin had come off. My forehead was the only part that didn't go pink after the skin came off...there is no improvement in my skin there. Tuesday i had to go to work... The first person who saw me as i walked in yells "Geese, someone got some sun!" um, yeah, I wasn't happy.... Now everyone thinks I spent 3 days at the beach burning myself up.... which would have been a lot more fun than this (oh and cheaper)... Skin around my chin & nose was really red and dry and looks really bad... I just kept applying the Aquaphor and the moisturiser given to me by the doctor (that doesn't hurt to apply anymore)... So it's now Wednesday and I'm still pink with bright red skin around my nose and mouth that's very dry... face is somewhat itchy... I can't comment whether my skin has improved elsewhere because it's still pink... but I do think maybe some of my dark freckles on the side of my face are more noticeable now than before?... I think this could be because I had 6 sessions of IPL last year and now that skin has been removed??... I'm just trying to be patient and hope that I receive these amazing results in a couple of days because at the moment I'm still wishing I hadn't of waisted that 5 days of my life.... I've learnt a valuable lesson.. if it's not broken, don't fix it....

HI Bamf, Was wondering how the results were ultimately with the Vi-peel? It sounds like it was pretty traumatic. Were you happy a month later?
9750anon (2 posts) 27 May 2010
Has anyone tried the newer Vi PRECISION peel? It's suppose to be better with more skin tightening...
JerseyCarolinaCaliGirl (8 posts) 2 Aug 2010
The results with the ViPeel were amazing. A month later yes, great. However, if you don't follow up with subsequent peels as directed, your skin does go back to the lackluster finish that it previously was.... I guess that's what happens when you're fighting the environment.
9630anon (10 posts) 9 Aug 2010
HI Jersey Carol, How many subsequent peels are you talking about and how soon afterward did you do your next one?
JerseyCarolinaCaliGirl (8 posts) 10 Aug 2010
If you read up on the ViPeel website it will fill you in on the suggested course of treatments. I only did one peel. I would have had better results by having more than one peel. Most spas sell them in 2-packs.
