Hump Re-appeared After Rhino/septoplasty

WORTH IT$4,400

I had an open rhino/septo done 12 days ago and my cast came off 6 days ago. The main reason for the op was to remove a large hump on my bridge, but the surgeon felt it best also to lift the tip by 1 mm (to shorten the projection), and in fact during surgery he had to lift it slightly more because he said the end of my septum was skew so he had to cut a piece off (??)

Anyhow, since my cast has come off, a hump has re-appeared @ the top on my nose! I don't think it's swelling because when I feel it it feels hard, definately like bone. It's not big, and it's not the same sort of hump I had before (my old hump was more like a hook nose whereas this new hump is at the top only & ends to where the tip cartilage starts). But it has gotten bigger since it first appeared, and I am scared it might even get bigger! I have not phoned the surgeon yet as I am trying not to panic, and my next appointment with him is in 8 days time. Most people say it's hardly noticeable, and some say it gives my nose a bit of character as opposed to being dead-straight which can sometimes look fake & like you've had work done.

I am pretty sure that the "bump" is bone & definately not swelling. I think that it may have been caused by my tip dropping a bit since the cast coming off, as I can feel a distinctive "dip/dent" halfway down my nose where the bone ends & the cartilage starts. Do you think that taping your nose up @ night can cause this, if you are maybe taping it too tightly? (e.g. maybe the taping causes the cartilage tip to drop thereby creating the impression of a hump on the bony top?) I only taped it the first 2 nights after the cast came off then stopped because I was scared this was causing the hump).

I am not that happy about it, because although the new small bump is nothing compared to the huge hook-like hump I used to have, the way I see it, if I paid a surgeon to remove the hump, then I don't want it replaced with another one!

Does anyone know if bridge humps re-appearing is normal/common after a rhinoplasty? Or do you think this is a post-op complication which could justify revision surgery? I know they make you wait a year, and I am also very weary of doing too much nose surgery...one may end up looking even worse than before. Would love any advice!

Apart from this hump re-appearing which I still need to discuss with him, in general he has been very helpful and approachable and took time to explain things to me. My rating of him may change though if my new hump stays!

Similar problem here. When my cast came off my nose was perfectly straight and the crookedness completely gone. There then seemed to be a bump appear again on one side which feels as hard as bone. You shouldn't worry too much at this stage though, mine already seems to have diminished slightly. It may be scar tissue or a callous formed on the bone which in most people, will dissipate with time. You may not see this happening straight away though so I'd hang on in there. Mine has taken a few weeks to go down- for some it can take months or even up to a year. Hope that helps
Thanks for the comment. Here are some before & after pics. In these after pics you can only just see the bump forming, but it is now a few days later and it is more visible: http://www.picturetrail.com/sfx/album/view/22448638 Password is "MishNose"
hi.was just wondering how the bump was now? i had surgery 9 days ago and hav the same problem.
Hi Saz The hump is still there, but to be honest I have sort of gotten used to it now. Most people hardly notice it. I have been to my surgeon for a 3-month post op consultation, & he says that after 6 months if it bothers me he can do something to fix it (e.g. cartilage implants). But I doubt whether I will, as I have heard that there are more risks with revision surgery. For you, 9 days is very early, so my advice would be to wait a while - my nose has been changing all the time, my tip is still a bit numb after 3 months, and only after 2 months did most of the swelling on my bridge subside. So as impatient as I too was, waiting really is the best thing to do. All the best! Mish
Do you still have the hump or did it get better
No I still have the hump. Went to see my surgeon for the 3-week post-op consultation, and showed him the hump. He says it most probably formed because the tip has dropped a bit, giving the impression of a bony hump on the bridge. He said he will re-assess it after 6 months and if it's still there and bothering me he can operate to fix it - most likely with adding more cartilage into the tip.
exactly the same thing that happend to me, twice. I had my first operation to remove a hump and to fix a deviated septum. The deviated septum wasnt fixed which I was alright with because it was slightly deviated but the hump was gone it was perfectly straight. a month after I could slighly see a hump starting to appear and 3 months after it was def there. I think it could be one of three things; either your body is building up callasis ( sorry about the spelling) , scar tissue or the dr simply never did a good job at removing the full extent of the hump. The thing is, if your dr never removed the hump entirely, the swelling in that first month would mask or fill in the surface irregularities making it appear ruler straight ( the tape you take off after surgery molds the swelling straight over the irregularities if that makes sense). I hate when I hear drs say time will make it better because in my case and many others it makes it worse. A touch up will be needed if its scar tissue ask about steroid shots. Fill me in on what happend I know its been a year since you have posted this.
