Tummy tuck incision leaking? Surgeon says not to worry but I am.

Question

I’m a month post op and my incision has started leaking one end. It isn’t opening up and it’s been confirmed there’s no infection or seroma. What is this? How do I get it to stop? It’s driving me crazy and surgeons are just saying don’t worry but it’s leaking through bandages, clothes and bed sheets.

Wound is leaking?I’m sorry to hear about your wound healing problems. If you feel that you must get a second opinion from another surgeon, perhaps this would be a good way to find out what’s going on with your wound. One possibility is that you’re having a spitting suture. However, I simply could not tell online what exactly is going on. Therefore I suggest a physical examination for a second opinion.

Usually, leaking with that significant amount should be a concern. A second opinion is always a choice. If you are still experiencing wound drainage at this point in time, you must already have developed a seroma. Schedule an appointment with your surgeon or with another for an examination.

While there may be areas of slight healing delay responsible for small amounts of drainage, wound leakage sufficient to saturate bandages, clothing, and bedsheets is excessive. The presence of a clear or serous (yellow tinged) fluid suggests a seroma, perhaps too small to be palpated. Often, an ultrasound study is required to locate these collections.
Maintain close followup with your plastic surgeon.
